Surgery and High Blood Pressure

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for surgery on August 4th. I currently have high blood pressure but have not been on medication for a year. I know I know bad bad! But I lost my insurance and just have not gone back to the dr. I check it periodically and it is usually around 145/90 or somewhere around there.

I know that the consequences of untreated blood pressure include enlarged heart, which shows up on an EKG. My question is... is there a possibility that I will be turned away for lap band surgery once I arrive because my blood pressure is too high or I have an enlarged heart. Or will they be able to give me something to lower my blood pressure before surgery.

Any nurses on here or anyone that knows or has had this experience.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, Well I'm not a nurse.. but I had to go in for my pre-op testing and that included a EKG. I also have HBP, the day I had my appt. my BP was 161/90 and I didn't have to lose my surgery date. When do you have your pre-ops? Every situation and Dr's rules are different, this was just my experience. Best of luck to you.
