Pre-Op on 11/8...Surgery on 11/16...Game On!

Recommended Posts

Just some random thoughts going through my head before the big day...

After jumping through all the hoops required to get to this point I finally have a surgery date for 11/6. I was kind of surprised they only want me to do liquid diet 8 days prior to surgery but I'm not complaining. I have struggled the past week with not eating well but hopefully today I'll get that under control.

I really shouldn't complain too much about the hoop jumping because insurance-wise this has been a fairly easy process but I still have that thought in the back of my mind that something is going to happen and they'll say they aren't going to pay. I'm just going to put those thoughts to rest, be positive, and not worry until I have a reason to.

It is encouraging that I have found several posters who have lost 200+ lbs. I don't care how you lose it but to accomplish that takes dedication and discipline and I am getting my mind ready for the challenge. This is an opportunity to change my life in the most positive way since I married my wife 5 1/2 years ago. She has been very supportive in my decision to have this done as well as the very few close family members that I've told.

I have never so much as been admitted to a hospital, no outpatient surgeries, so I'm telling myself maybe this is a good thing because if it is a very bad experience at least I don't have to suffer through the weeks of dread going into it. Sometimes its good to be oblivious until after the fact. As of now I'm planning to take off 6 days, work 2 days, and then off another 4 days. I would like to keep those 2 extra days to take off around Christmas but I'll use them if I'm still struggling at that point. I work from home so I know I'll have an easier transition than most.

I guess that's it for now, I just wanted to get these thoughts out and anyone is welcome to comment. I appreciate the opportunity this sites gives us to see what others have experienced, learned, and allow us to prepare ourselves for the journey ahead.

For me, the hardest part about this surgery is having to come face to face with my lifelong addiction to eating for no reason. With the sleeve you can't just eat for the heck of it; you surely can't over eat or drink just because something tastes good. You're forced to pay attention to how you eat, what you eat, and how much you're eating. To be honest, I really resented getting sleeved at first. I was pissed that I had to follow the sleeve rules. But when I came to my senses and realized that the only way I would ever lose this weight and become successful is thru this restrictive procedure, I conceded. The weight is coming off slowly but surely and me and my sleeve are becoming the best of friends.

Wishing you a successful surgery, pleasant hospital stay, and speedy recovery. Remember, no matter how hard or bad it seems at first, it does get better with time.

Thanks Sleevie! I'm sure I'll have that moment of what the %^$ have I done to myself but I'm sure as soon as the scale starts moving in the right direction that will be my confirmation. Good luck on your journey as well.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
