Recommended Posts

My surg date is dec. 7th. I was very excited until today, I heard a horror story or co workers mothers weight loss surg. Now for some reason I am in a panic. Any suggestions?

If you do your research and feel comfortable with your decision, you should not back out. The bottom line is you are doing this for yourself. There are risks with any surgery but it is usually more dangerous not to treat the obesity issue.

I think that no matter what medical procedure you ever have, someone will have a horror story to go with it. Getting your gallbladder out? I'm sure someone can tell you a story about someone who almost died, someone who can barely function with it gone, etc. Weightloss surgery is no different. There are risks... don't kid yourself about that. You have to decide if the risks are worth the potential rewards. I'd bet 99% of us who have had the surgery would say YES. Keep researching, be comfortable with what you are going to do. Good luck to you.

I have had moments where I think "this is surgery" or "this is a permanent life change". Those scare the poopies outta me because I usually lose weight really well, like 15 pounds a month for 3-4 months, then I self sabotage and gain the weight back within like 1.5 months. So even though I am scared sometimes I feel like "fat me" is just trying to talk "skinny me" out of doing this.

There are horror stories everywhere for every different sugery. I just recently had corrective eye surgery ( I have a lazy eye) and boy oh boy I should have just stayed off the internet. I scared myself silly with all the horror stories. But what I have found out is that for every one horror story about weight loss surgery there are at least a dozen or more successful stories.

Try to stay positive, if you really want this surgery than totally do it. If one horror story is gonna change your mind though you may not be ready to take the plunge so to speak. Most everyone on here will say that you won't regret your decision to have WLS, almost everyone says it's the best thing they could have done for themselves.

Only you can decide what's right for you though. Good Luck and keep us posted!

Wow right on Kemo & Krista!

The only thing I will add is that I got to a point in my struggle against obesity where I am willing to take the risk. However it is not out of desperation. I gave Weight Watchers, slim fast, pills , gyms etc many many GOOD tries and I have researched extensively. Like you, I have heard the good, the bad & the ugly & I still think it will be a risk worth taking for ME. You need to decide if you are at that point or not. Best wishes!!!

Your co-worker's mother is probably a lot older than you are...and probably has a whole lot more co-morbidities than you have. As the other ladies have said, there is a horror story for every surgery. I had a friend's dad die from gall bladder surgery, 25 years ago. Methods and knowledge change over the years and the medical professionals get better all the time.

If you are comfortable with your surgeon and his/her practice, talk over your fears with them. I didn't like the first surgeon/practice I visited and went looking for another doc immediately. My surgeon is awesome and I met his staff on the first visit...wonderful people! Once you are comfy with the surgeon and practice, it's a lot easier to move forward with surgery if you trust the doc and practice.

Have you had the psyche and nutrition appointments yet? Those will help you make your final decision with all the information in place. There is DEFINITELY a head aspect to this surgery and you need to make sure you're mentally and emotionally ready before you do this.

Good luck on your journey!! :)

well i hope this helps you i had my sleeve 3 days ago here in mexico and am doing great. The gas is the biggest problem. I am going home in the morning. Do what you feel is best for you in you heart. You must of had a reason for wanting to do this. There is a thread on here called the WLS DO's and DON't you should look for it . It made me think.. I wish you best in your journey.

My friend had the surgery done in Mexico and had problems due to the doctors mistake. Afetr a year in and out of hospitals she had her entire stomach removed. Quite the horror story....but..you know what...after everything that has happened to her she still says it was the best decision of her life. She would do it all over again. That is why i too had the surgery two weeks ago tomorrow. Cant be happier.

Hi, I think everyone has second and third thoughts as surgery gets closer. I'd be worried if you didn't this is a big decision and no one but you can make it. Keep researching and asking questions and remember you do not have to make the final decision until 12-7.

It's natural to be scared before surgery. The best thing you can do it discuss your fears with your surgeon or anesthesiologist. I'm sure they have heard the same concerns from previous patients. As a nurse I learned about the extreme complications that can happen with surgery. I also know those extremes rarely happen. I know the worst, yet I'm still going forward with my surgery because I trust my surgeon. If I had any concerns I would not hesitate to talk to him. You deserve as much peace-of-mind as possible.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
