The way people treat you...

Recommended Posts

Today after I did my three miles I went to the store. Usually I park my car far away, however this morning I parked closer. I went in the door that wasn't electric. A man and his wife were leaving and he held the door open for me. Now 77 pounds ago no one ever held the door open for me. Nor would they make eye contact with me. Now that I'm 77 pounds thinner I am seeing things that I over looked as if I didn't I would've told them all to get bent. Men and women make eye contact with me. At work most of the attorneys smile and say good morning as to where 8 months ago I wouldn't even get a response. This just goes to show just how shallow the human race is. I just don't understand the way people treat obese and or overweight people. I could easily ignore the ones that treated me like poop. But I choose to treat everyone the same, big or small. I hope one day that they look at how obese people perceive them. Like how much of a jerk they truely are and smile the whole time that thought runs through the mind...... :)

I have been struggling with this same thing. I have lost 38 pounds and I can't believe the difference already in the way people treat me. Some Directors came in for a meeting recently and all made a point of stopping to say hello, etc. In the past they would have only spoken or stopped by if they needed something. Men rush to hold open the door for me and to allow me to go ahead of them in line. When I am out with my family, I can see guys taking a second look or trying to make eye contact with me. I have coworkers that now go out of there way to speak to me each day. I appreciate it but at the same time, why didn't they do this 38 pounds ago? I was still the wonderful, valuable person then that I am now. It sort of pisses me off in a way and I am trying to wrap my head around this new reaction that I receive. I am sure it will only continue to increase in awkwardness the closer I get to goal.

Most people are jerks, simple as that. Ok, maybe not most, but you get the idea. I am a loud boistrous, bordering on obnoxious fun, confident woman and people always noticed me. I have been lucky in that I make people talk to me and take notice because of my personality and they tended not to see the weight. On that same note though, I was always "one of the guys" when it came to men and not a threat to most women. Now, I get comments galore from both sides about my weight loss. Like I said, I have been lucky in that respect with people I know. With people in general that I don't know that is a different story, men hold the door, the elevator, nod and smile and women tend to ignore me. Like I said people tend to be jerks.

Although, I've never experience this myself when I was obese I've seen it happen recently and I'm hurt that people can be such jerks. No matter your size we are all human beings, now that I've hit goal the same jerks comment negatively to me with comments like "shut up" skinny or Your skinny now we don't need your advice. So in this society your damn if you do or damn if you don't.....LOL

I've noticed all of the same things others posted have noted. However, I don't think it all has changed just because the world is shallow and I am now thin. I can look back now and see that I was not "open" to strangers and probably didn't put out very friendly vibes. The new me is a happy ray of sunshine. I often wonder how much of the nice gestures stem from weightloss and how much could be attributed to my general postive change in demeanor.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
