Did anyone do their Psych Eval and Nutrician Appt BEFORE attending the seminar?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys! Just wondering did anyone have their Psych and Nutrician appts before the seminar? I am so antsy to go ahead and do as much as I can before the seminar-aside from the initial consult bc that HAS to be after the seminar which isn't until NOV 10th!!! I know,I know, not that long to wait :P but I am thinking of doing the psych and nut appts prior to the seminar. Only thing is I may have to pay out of pocket for the nutrician appt bc my insurance doesn't cover it which is why I am switching tomorrow but the switch won't be fully in effect until middle of next month-I don't want to wait! I just seriously need to calm down bc I am getting wayyy wrapped up in getting the sleeve. I can hardly think of anything else! And things like my husband pretty much making me go with him and the kids to Taco Bell for dinner tonight make it worse, which I refused and did not eat from there bc it's gross,my son wouldn't eat,the twins are too little to eat there,so it ended up just being my hubs and my 2 yr old daughter eating but yet we still had to all sit there. We couldn't order it to go bc he said he wanted us to all get out of the house as a family...Seriously,I could barely fit in the booth,I had to very uncomfortably squeeze into it...I wanted to cry so bad but I knew it would ruin everyone's night.. I haven't ate out in IDK how long bc we never get out all together as a family, obviously long enough to NOT realize that I couldn't fit in a restaurant booth! This is bad... Ok this turned into a rambling vent...lol. I feel better though! haha,ok so now I am probably gonna schedule my psych and nut eval tomorrow and get them over with lol!

I'd hold off on the psych eval. One of the things I had to explain was the surgery I planned on getting and why. I learned a lot of this at the initial meeting. It gives you an overview of all of the options. Although when I went, I didn't realize there was a sleeve. Still, I recommend waiting on the psych eval. You want to make sure your evaluation covers what it needs to, and your bariatric surgeon's office is qualified to make sure it does. They usually recommend a psychologist to use as well.

Oh thank you for that advice. I think then I may just schedule the dietician appt and then wait for the psych eval. Thanks! :)

Maybe it's my "linear" personality, but it felt weird to even set up appointments with my surgeons bariatric team before meeting him. I researched him extensively, but I felt I needed to meet him and "hire" him, before going to see "his" nutritionist, psychologist etc. I did not want to get "too deep" with his practice, in case I wanted to switch. This is not necessary though, it's how I roll.B)

I actually had my consult before I went to teh seminar. i just called the surgeon that was hosting the seminar and set up my consultation. Like you I was WAY excited to get this thing going. I had my consult on 10/6 and the seminar on 10/13. I just went to get more info and meet people like me who wanted to change their life. I did wait for my psyc eval. i did that on the 20th. now I am just waiting for insurance approval---fingers crossed !! hoping to have it don enext month. as of now they went ahead and put me down for the 16th but only because they have to give the ins company a date when they submit the request........good luck to you and i completely am with you on the not fitting in booths. i just recently had a baby and loved using the pregnant thing as an excuse for not fitting in the booths.

Oh yea,I can see where your coming from. My surgeons office has a dietician, but they just refer their patients to a psych. So we shall see. =)

I am always slammed with appts for my kiddos so I have really had to squeeze these ones for me into a very tight schedule! I just had twins 9 months ago so I am used to everyone telling me how cute I am while pregs and getting all this attention lol now I am just the fat girl with cute kids and a hot husband....I can see all those looks from ppl like wth is he doin with her? Good thing he loves me bc I need his support!

One thing I wish I had done was to call and set up the appointments AS SOON as I had the authorizations. If you know who you are going to see (the nut and psych) you could always call now and set up an appt for after your seminar. That will lock you into an early appt after your seminar and if for some strange reason you change your mind afte the seminar you could always call and cancel.

I had to wait 2 week for my initial nut appt. You just never know how their scheduling works.

Good Luck!!!

It's weird, but the seminar is one of the last things I did! I didn't learn anything new that I hadn't already researched myself. I originally was only supposed to be in this process for 3 months, but thanks to an insurance mix up, it stretched to 6 months. Because of that, I had all tests and evals completed early on. Good luck!

Yes girl I found that out today! I went to schedule my nut appt and the first available was on november 20 something!! LOL,can't remember the actual date at the moment,I believe it may be the 26th. And as far as the psych eval,he said he can have me in within the week but he would rather me attend the seminar first. So,I will just let go and let God,things will fall into place throughout November like they should! I am realistically expecting a 2012 surgery date! smile.png

I have researched it so much also! I really feel comfortable with getting the sleeve and can't wait!

We may be getting things done around the same time then!!! wink.png I am in the process of switching my insurance from Health Net to Anthem Blue Cross bc Health Net no longer covers the psych eval. So,I have the seminar, sleep study, and nut appts scheduled, all for November. But I have to wait until my insurance switches to Anthem Blue Cross to get the psych eval unless I wanna pay $150 outta pocket which I think I will just wait! Lol Good luck to you!!

I would wait on the psych eval. One of the main questions/concerns with bariatric surgeries is unrealistic expectations. There's so more than to just getting it done, healing up, and losing weight. The mental aspect of WLS is overwhelming even for the most researched, well-versed patients. The cutting part of the surgery is just a tiny part of the equation. I was a revision patient, I had been to a couple of seminars for my band, been through 3 nut classes, researched more than what most people have in every aspect of surgery, nutrition, found a mentor who was already 2 years out, picked brains, read, read, read, paid for a subscription to medical journal sites so I could get my hands on full research articles and publications, least to say, I still wasn't completely for everything that came with life post-op, and how to navigate through my complications. I was prepared, or so I thought for complications/obstacles, but honestly, I had a lot to deal with post-op. Way more emotionally overwhelming than I was prepared.

My psych eval was a joke to say the least, but one of the main conversations we had was about the expectations of surgery, and life post-op. I knew the questions that would be asked, but when the psych asked "and when you lose weight what do you expect to find out about yourself?" I was stumped completely. I was already confident, didn't have self-esteem issues, nor did I allow people to treat me poorly because I was fat. So, I didn't have any expectations on what I would find out about myself. Least to say, that couldn't be further from the truth.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
