Hello all!

So this is my first time posting Here. Actually its my first time talking about my vsg in public. I've had my vsg done late May 2011, so I'm almost 5 months out. So far I have only lost a whopping 30 pounds, I lost most of them in the first 2 months. I never told anyone except my parents that I got it done. I am gradually getting depressed because I see everyone that has done it lose so much weight by this point and I am still stuck where I am.

I know my eating habits are horrible, the first two months I was going by the book, and after that I started loading myself on carbs and sugar, I also never throw up, but I eat till I am too full and I feel like I am eating so much more than I should. Is there any way I can get back on track? Or did my stomach really expand, I don't know if its what I am eating or because I am not exercising, but it feels that when I read the stories here, people are just magically losing weight. Help :(

It can be so easy to fall back into old habits, so much of this surgery is mental, YOU have to work on YOU.

It is time to get back to basics, go back to following the Protein first rule. Fill up on that, then veggies, and you likely will not have room for all those carbs. Perhaps start measuring what you are eating and stop when it is gone. Don't go back for seconds. Slow down on your eating too so you will feel when you are full and retrain yourself to learn when to stop. Make sure you are getitng your Water too.

I have heard great things about the "5 day pouch test" perhaps that will help get you back on track, try googling it to read up on it.

And get moving! Force yourself to get up and exercise.

Hey Malika

I think you answered all your questions by yourself. Number one : take it slow in eating and try and break the habit of eating till you get to the point of absolute full.

Number 2: Protein before carbs. What i do is ive got allot of low fat turkey slices in the fridge and low fat cheeses ( swiss or goat) and i drink allot of Water. Refined carbs are what got you here and you have to take a long look at what your goals are and realize that being thin is going to make you happy ultimately.

I do believe your stomach can stretch but not in 5 months. Take the 5 day pouch test and that should prove your fine. The basic rule states calories in calories out , but then you have the thermo effect of your body working to break down certain foods like Protein , complex carbs . Join myfitnesspal.com and log in all your food and dont cheat. That way you will be able to fight the cravings and rule your own life,

I hope this helps you and best of wishes :)

Thanks guys, you have no idea how encouraging this was. I'm going to try the 5 day pouch test tomorrow and see how that goes. I'll let you know if it works :) I was just starting to feel like this was the end of my weight loss journey.

Maleeka - I'm going to be blunt! There is nothing, and I stress, NOTHING magical about some of us losing weight at a faster rate. Granted, some of us lose quicker than others...but, at just under five months I'd lost almost 80 lbs. - I was at my doctor's goal. Over the next 3.5 weeks, I'd gotten to MY goal, which was five lbs less than Dr. Wonderful. Until I reached my physicians goal, I didn't have anything I shouldn't. NOTHING sweet passed my lips. I've been getting the hang of maintaining since Dec. (surgery was June 11, 2010) At one point last spring I was 18 lbs under the doctor's goal and I was worried about HOW TO QUIT. I had to up my calories a little, I switched to 1% milk and as my nurse told me, 'don't be so rigid'. I added a half piece of pumpkin bread every Friday to my menu! Star Bucks pumpkin bread is great!! I mangaged to put on six lbs - I wasn't looking good....I now am between 138 and 142. This is where I'm comfortable. Anyway...........up your Protein and fluids, cut out ALL the sweets. Don't sabatage yourself. They have stressed to me that YES you can stretch your tummy if you continue to over eat. 'Just because you can, doesn't mean you should' Good luck, you CAN do it, but there is nothing magic about it!!! Surgery doesn't mean we don't have to still make wise choices!!

I agree about measuring food. I am not quite 17 months out and I still measure or weight what I eat at home. It's not really possible when eating out, you have to just 'eyeball' it - otherwise, it's still helpful. I also keep an online long Fitday.com I want to keep track of my calories and Protein. My doctor has never stressed carbs unless someone isn't losing, then I think it's a big deal.

I have lost almost 50 pounds in about 3 months. I am exercising -- cardio 5x a week and weight lifting 2-3x a week. I am also eating Protein first. Whenever I have eaten a lot of carbs, I either stall or gain weight.

I should clarify that "a lot of carbs" is over 50 grams, which really isn't a lot at all (especially compared to what I used to consume before surgery).

When I stay on track with eating and exercising, I lose. When I don't stay on track, I don't lose and sometimes gain. Thta's the only magic I know. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
