looking into the band

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I have been looking at this site for about a week. I wanted to get some real opinons bad and good about the band. I have learned so much here I realy feel that I will soon be able to make a decision.I am so pleased to see how everyone encourages each other.

I am going to a information session 1st of Aug. to learn more esp the facility.I have already called my ins. company they do cover the lapband if I am at 40 bmi. I am only 37 bmi I would have to gain 20 more lbs not wanting to do that. I have heard of being approved of if you have some other ailment. I have maligment high blood pressure very hard to control I take alot meds to keep it down.

Well my stats are 5'10" 260lbs. I have battled my weight since i got married 13 yrs ago and I am usually around 220 but this past year I have gained 40lbs. I'm not sure how it happened and thats what scares me. My mom was morbidly obese nearly my whole life she had the bypass done 18 mths ago. Did not like what I seen especially the malnutrition part. I am 33 and I dont want to battle this for the rest of my life I want to get controll befor it goes to far and kills me. When I make my final dec. and I get some where with docs and ins I will post again.

You guys are truly an inspiration to me. I used to think wls was the easy way out but now I see fighters in the battle of their lives and youre winning with the weapon you chose.

Good luck making your decision! I'm almost a year out and I'm not a bit sorry I chose this path. :)

I'm only 11 days postop but I was wondering, do you have arthritis or high cholesterol or pre diabetes or joint pain or something because usually with 2 comorbities they will cover the under 40 BMI and you wouldn't have to gain the extra pounds just to have to loose again.

I went through the same thing with bc/bs but I didn't want to jump the all of the hoops and I was going to have to go through 6 months of dieting so I did the self pay in Mexico.

Best of luck and it will all work out. So far I'm very pleased but like I said I'm just 11 days postop.

I have high cholesterol not to the extreme but enough to be on meds and extremely high blood pressure without meds it easily gets to 220/140. Some doctors couldnt beleive I wasnt dead already much less able to act normaly. I do have family history of just about evrything. I am though 100 lbs over weight. we will see in few weeks.

I have been reading on this for a month now. I already had my first consult with Dr. Was waiting on insurance approval for sleep study. Its been almost 3 weeks and haven't heard anything about sleep study.

I went to visit my primary physician last week and he is not very happy and is not agreeable for me to have the lapband surgery.

I have talked to family members about the surgery also.

I am bi-polar and severe clincally depressed. Went to talk to my counselor this week about the surgery. Between all the talkin and thinking I have done lately, have decided I don't think this is for me. I have too many up and downs with my moods swings and all. I'm not sure I could stay healthy with the lapband. I am a single parent and working. Trying to deal with alot of things daily, without having to worry if I am eating healthy enough. One day I might eat the next time I maynot eat at all. That wouldn't be healthy for me .

So on hold for now...........:phanvan

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
