How many calories per day?

Recommended Posts

I am 2 months out from surgery, and usually get 700-900 calories per day. I am an average to slow but steady loser. I am considering upping my calories to 900-1000 per day to see if that helps speed things up. I typically get about 50 grams of carbs and 70-100 grams of Protein per day. I am wondering how many calories per day you all eat and how far out from surgery are you?

Thanks!!!

you've got me beat.. I am about 2.5 months out and get 500-650 calories...35-60 carbs... I have lost 30#s since surgery. I'd up the calories but it doesn't seem possible. If I follow the rules, the food just doesn't have all that many calories and it just doesn't fit... Would need to add a meal or two or drink high calorie drinks to make it happen. But alas, I am following the rules. Don't drink your calories. and 3 meals a day.

I am following my surgeons rules, which are Protein first, at least 65 grams of Protein per day, lots of Water, and eat 5 small meals a day. He also says there is nothing wrong with Protein Drinks, and in fact they are recommended to boost your protein intake. I track everything I put in my mouth, and I eat very well, lots of fresh fruit, lean protein, and Peanut Butter. I am NOT getting these calories from junk.

I am 2.5 months out and doing about 1,200 calories to slow down weight loss otherwise it would be around 800 calories. I still get in around 50 to 80 grams Protein and anywhere from 50 to 120 grams of carb.

If it helps I started this weekend at 192 - went to San Diego. Friday night ate at Benihana's and Saturday at Ruth's Chris. In between had a turkey sandwich, a chicken sandwich, a small bag of popcorn at the movies, a Ben and Jerry's Waffle Cone of Mint chocolate Chip, some potato chips, some mini Nutter Butter Cookies, basically took weekend off (got to remember to eat slower) and ended the weekend at 192 pounds. All my exercise consisted of a lot of sight seeing walking around the USS Midway and Seaport Village. I assure you I went well over 1,200 calories per day and a ton of carbs and Protein.< /p>

I started in July 2010 at 305 through diet and exercise I lost 70 pounds to 235 by time of surgery August 4, 2011. Now at 192. So lost 43 pounds in 2 1/2 months. I was a bit run down so my PA and Dietician suggested upping to 1,200 calories to slow down and regain stamina since I am active again at gym and tennis.

This weekend was a bit much of a pig out but, I needed a break from being good and been fighting cravings for awhile so I figured it is a vacation, why worry. Tomorrow I will be back on regular diet, only have 12 pounds and am happy to make it a pound a week or every two weeks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
