Bruised but not Broken

Recommended Posts

Friday night after a a lovely dinner (shared of course) with friends, my husband and I was traveling down a highway at 55 mph and someone pulled out from the side road-they had a stop sign. We hardly had any time to react with the proof of the small skid marks. We were wearing our seatbelts and airbags were deployed. They are extremely smelly and smokey. I don't know what was worse, the impact or trying to breathe the through the smoke and smell afterwards. Luckily there was 2 EMTs in the vehicle behind us that started rendering first aid immediately. We are both very shaken, very sore from the seatbelt and airbags, sore wrist (trying to brace the impact) and my husband put his arm out to protect me from the air bag (picture from the blind side-he tried to stop it).We also have some bruising to the legs as they hit the dashboard and one set of broken glasses. We both had our own ambulance ride complete with neckbrace and backboards to the hospital and was released later that evening to a friend. Then on the way home, we almost had another head on collision as someone was on the wrong side of the road and never went back over. We had to swerve at the last minute to the other side. Luckily there was no other oncoming traffic.

As the doctor put it, we are bruised but nothing broken. Which has become our mantra. We are hoping to get more information about the other person insurance tomorrow as we did not exchange at the accident. From my understanding they were out walking around their vehicle afterwards.

Wow, you are lucky to be alive! We were in a similar but not as bad accident the day before I left to get my sleeve. If I could give you any advice it would be to contact a lawyer now. I thought I was just shaken, nothing broken, and was prepared to just dealing with the other person's insurance but since I have had major back pain which I didn't know would be life long till later. Your lawyer will take care of insuring that you get the care (chiropractic/physical therapy) even long after the wreck while their insurance company will only want to pay for a small portion and then nothing after a year. In a wreck like that you surely had neck/back injuries even if their aren't any broken bones.

From the looks of those pictures.....you both are lucky to be alive and its almost a MIRACLE that there were no severe injuries. Glad you both are ok. I guess seatbelts and airbags do save lives eh?

Sorry you had to go through this but glad you are both alright. I've never been in a wreck where the air bags have deployed but as you said, I hear it is pretty scary. I hope the insurance thing goes smoothly. I'm assuming by the looks of the car and the airbag that your car is totaled. Saying a prayer for you.

Thanks for all the well wishes. We finally got a rental this morning and a copy of the accident report. The 16 yr old girl admitted she thought she had time to clear the intersection to turn left. Clearly not when the damage to their vehicle was the front driver side. The other carrier has already declared the car a total loss and is even willing to pay off the loan completely-value was a few hundred short of the payoff. We have already been pre-approved for a loan so now we get to find a new car. We are partial to the Ford seeing what happens in an accident. But are looking at all options.

I did call my surgeon to see if there is anything we should be worry about but at long as we do not have any severe abdominal pain, we should be fine. Now if all other aches and soreness will go away.

Thank you to all the people who have commented on Klus263's post. I'm her husband and I can safely tell you that I thought that we were both going to be in Heaven last Friday night The intersection this happened at is a county road. We had the Right of Way and the young lady had a stop sign. Speed limit is 55 mph and people always seem to think that they can pull right on out. I replay the accident in slow motion often and it terrifies me each time. I'm off work for the rest of this week nursing a concussion and a bit of whiplash. Klus 263 is a bit more of a trooper working a half day today and then we leave to assist in getting her parents moved. Thankfully we have help for that and have hired some people to load a truck.

What a blessing to only have sorness and bruises from such a horrible accident. It could have been so much worse, so glad you are as well as can be after such an event. Continue to be blessed!

Oh my goodness, I am so happy you both survived this accident, and with no major injuries. My husband was in a similar accident many years ago and the person was a hit and run, they never found the person who totalled his car. Thankfully he was bruised but not broken as well and didn't suffer any lengthy injuries.

Best wishes for speedy healing and good luck with the new car shopping.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
