Nausea after eating anything

Recommended Posts

I'm about 11 days out of my band to sleeve revision. This didn't start happening until the last few days but every time I eat anything (I'm on purees) I get nauseous after about 4 really small bites. I tried taking zofran before eating, no go. I'm using the prevacid solutabs daily and getting in all my Water with no problem but I'm annoyed by the nausea with food. Has this happened to anyone else?

Same here.

I had my surgery almost 3 weeks ago and I am still experiencing nausea and lots of vomiting. Last Thursday I went to the doctor and I in fact puked at his office. They realized then I was not just being a sissy, so they changed me from zofran to this anti nausea stickers that you glue behind your ear.

They did not fixed the issue completely, but helped.

Apparently Sleeves are known to cause a lot of puking, so it seems we have to suck it up for a while.

It could be your body's way of saying it isn't ready for puree's yet. I was on liquids (Water and Protein shakes pretty much) for a full two weeks before I transitioned and I found that I pushed it a couple more days. Maybe do a day of liquids and see how you feel afterwards. Or make your puree's more liquidy than you normally would.

I would also call your surgeon's office, just to make sure everything is okay.

Good luck and it does get better!

I know all of us are different, but I had no nausea or throwing up at all. In my research I found that it happens sometimes immediately post op, but I don't think 11 days out or especially 3 wks out is normal. It's very difficult to stay hydrated without nausea and throwing up, so please take care to keep your Dr's involved and get IV fluids if needed. Anti-nausea meds help some people, but I'd also get on a PPI/acid reducer if you're not already on one. Good luck to you and I hope things get better for you soon!

Only time I felt nauseous was when I really had to throw up. Otherwise if I eat to much I feel like my stomach is like a lead pipe and it hits up in the esophagus until it moves down in about 1/2 hour.

Hey there, I am on day 23 and I was fortunate that I didnt have any troubles up to this point other than "normal" things, one thing that I had until 2 or 3 days ago was nausea whenever I would eat or drank anything, personally I had a little more trouble with drinking. If you arent getting the right amount of fluids in this may be what the trouble is, I couldnt ( and still arent able to) get enough fluids in and you may be a little dehydrated which may be causing some of your nausea. I took reglen in the hospital and when I went to my 1st week checkup and explained what was going on they put me back on it, I think I took that for about a week and quit because it made me so sleepy but I did feel a bit better after taking it, like I said about 2 or 3 days ago I noticed that the nausea wasnt anything like it had been so maybe due to the swelling and changes in your new tummy it will just take a little bit of time to work that out. I have felt my best just in the past 2 or 3 days, I am not nauseas anything like I have been and I am able to start getting in more fluids, I am only getting like 25-30oz of fluids-not even close to 64oz I am supposed to be getting and since I havent been as nauseas I am having a bit of an easier time getting in my protien, since then I am feelin less and less nausea. There is no way that I am eating some of the things that I see people are eating at 3 and 4 weeks out but I wasnt on pureed foods until my 3rd week, maybe your new tummy isnt ready for them yet. If you can handle mashed potatoes with a little gravy and chkn bouillon for added flavor that may not make you nauseas but go easy on the pureed foods, maybe your tummy is still swollen and just not ready for thicker foods just yet. Id say as long as it doesnt get worse, keep trying to get fluids in and just baby that tiny new tummy it will probably go away in a little bit more time. Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies! I had my 2 week followup yesterday and they said it's fairly normal for sleevers to have nausea. My surgeon also reminded me that I had the same problem with the band and when I advanced my diet it stopped. I forgot ALL about that. She said to try a little bit of softer solids like a hard boiled egg or something. Did that last night and wasn't nauseous again until I woke up this morning. Ate another hard boiled egg about an hour ago, no nausea. LOL I think my body just hates full liquids and purees.

I'm glad it's getting better for you and the eggs are helping!! I am sure you were happy about finally getting to eat something instead of drinking fluids all the time too.

:)

I woke up puking!! after 24 hrs of that - given a patch and anti nausea meds I was ok. Scary puking blood thought!

Only on the patch now and wonder if I should be on that but not trying to go back to the beginning so patch goes on!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
