How soon after sleeve surgery were you working out? I love to hula hoop!

Hi everyone!

I am having VSG November 8th- after much research, and the support of my doctor, I have determined that this is the best bariatric procedure available for me. I have Hashimoto's, which my thyroid is regulated for- but the extreme hunger, coldness, and moodiness if still very present.

I actually love running, and hula hooping (which is a recent hobby). How soon were you able to do moderate cardio (like an eliptical)?

The hula hoop by nature, will roll over and over my abdomen multiple times, and require a lot of abdominal work. I imagine this will be the most difficult thing to get back in to with the incisions and the soreness. What's your input?

How sore were you after? How sore were your incisions?

The docs invariably want you up and walking the day of surgery (or the next morning if you were done late in the day,) so low level elliptical should be no real problem as it's pretty low impact, though you may want to particularly take it easy with the arm movements if it feels like it's stretching things thru your abdomin - double check with your doc to be sure! Ditto on the hula-hooping - it doesn't seem like that would be as rigorous as doing crunches and sit-ups, but it may be a bit intense early on. After three weeks I was cleared to go back to the gym and resume some mild strength training, isolating the abdomin - no crunches, etc until about week 12 for me - and back into the pool after 4 weeks or so (a little later than some because I was still having a bit of seepage from one of the incisions that needed to stop before soaking it.)

I had a hernia fixed during my surgery, so I had to wait until 2 months before I could do very much, but I started walking immediately. I also did some dancing. Once I passed two months, I cranked up my work outs.

I was sleeved Oct 25th. I started back at the gym Monday. :smile1: Per docs OK!

However, I am not doing situps. I am basically doing the recombinant bike...

That is so exciting, October 25th was last week! :) I am hoping to back to the eliptical in a couple weeks. I figure hula hooping (because it's going to hit my mid area over and over) is going to be more of a direct issue, but we shall see.

I personally waited about 4 months, I just didn't feel up to till then, by that time my weight had dropped a good bit and I was ready to go.

Honestly, I would be careful with the hula hoop. I can see where that might cause some pain in your belly afterwards. Just know, that I am not doing a super heavy workout. I do the exercise bike for about 20-30 min. Sometimes on level 9, but I don't overdo it.

Hello, I have Hashimoto's too and pre-surgery I wondered if I was really going to lose weight at a standard pace ... if you have any doubts, don't worry. It comes right off! :)

Good Luck with your surgery and talk to your doc about exercising but more than anything I would trust your body and how your'e feeling.

I'm 12 days out and have been walking and was just cleared by the doctor to go back to the gym. I have had absolutely NO complications and went home from the hospital the day after surgery. SO looking forward to starting back lifting weights tomorrow (light, of course!) Hope you can get back to it soon too!

walking right away, 6 weeks for anything else. Can't lift over 10 pounds for 6 weeks... the staple line is not healed for 6 weeks. I couldnt wait to get back to the gym and my bellydance classes!

i walked day one home from the hospital. no issues with walking, it was encouraged. i was not supposed to lift over 10lbs for the 1st 2 weeks and 20lbs up to week 5 or until i saw my surgeon for clearance and NO ab exercises till then either.

all i did was walk until seeing my dr. then it all fair game. walking is great exercise anyway. i still do it almost daily at 7 months out.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life.       Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

        Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
