Tricare referral for VSG at an MTF??????

Recommended Posts

O.k. I have Tricare Prime and see a civilian pcm. She is on board with me getting a vsg. She submitted a referral to tricare for me to have a vsg done at an mtf. Tricare denied the first one so she has submitted another a different way. Still waiting to hear. Can anyone please tell me how to get this done.... My mtf (Ft. Benning, Ga.) doesn't do the surgery so I am trying to go to Fort Gordon, Ga about 4hrs away. Does anyone know how to get this done. Tricare tells me they don't have anything to do with an MTF and the MTF tells me that the referral has to go thru Tricare. I am so frustrated and upset as this is going on 3 weeks of going in circles to get no where. My husband deploys in December and I really wanted this done by then. Please help me I am not sure where to go from here. I make a bunch of calls and just get transfered from person to person. Has anyone transfered MTF"s with a civilian pcm to get this done?

I think in order to do the sleeve at the MTF you have to have a pcm at the MTF do the referral through the MTF program. Have you talked to the MTF that does the surgery to see if they can tell you how to go about doing it?

So I talked to Tricare and the MTF is requesting 6months of documented attempts of meds, excercise and diets. Any ideas of exactly what they are looking for exactly with the excercise and diet? If they are looking for foodjournal and excercise journal that I can give them. My pcm knows my meds so thats no problem. Any help on this would be great!

I was sleeves at a mtf last July. I got a referral from my PCM to the Bariatric clinic and then went to an info session where I was weighed to see if I qualified. I did and was given a list of requirements I had to do including various hospital exams, Mamo, pap, upper GI and I had to do 6 months of supervised weight loss- I did weight watchers. It was a really simple process and everyone was wonderful from start to finish. I was at Ft. Sam Houston.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
