17th - 20th Sleevers

Recommended Posts

Hi Oct 17 thru 20 Sleeve Sisters!

Just checking in to see how you are all doing.

After being sleeved on Monday 10/17 I stayed in hospital for two nights due to my BP being sky high due to pain. whoo - that was a doozy, but moved past it and got home safe and sound.

I have been in pain but it does get better day by day, thankfully. My husband has been taking great care of me and he has just been wonderful.

I've had a few unexpected things crop up. I thought ok, it's surgery. I will feel bad at first and gradually feel a bit better, day by day. I wasn't expecting new issues to keep popping up. They are managable issues, but still a pain in the patootie.

The two things bothering me most right now are that I get diarhea whenever I take my PPI (ugh). It feels like what I imagine dumping syndrome must be like. I feel like I am going to throw up (like pill is stuck), I get hot flashes and sweat profusely, feel nauseated and weak and headachy and overall sick to my stomach.

Plus I am, for the first time in my 49 years, experiencing severe anxiety. My doc called something in to the pharmacy for me today so I hope it'll all get better soon. I cannot get comfortable at night and can't get to sleep. I try all sorts of different positions but just feel like I am crawling out of my skin and get panicky. No matter where I sit / lay (couch, bed, recliner, etc) I cannot get comfortable.

I do have good moments, praise God, but sure will be glad when this is all behind me and I move on the the "it was all so worth it" stage. I can tell my incision areas are much better. Still hurts when I sneeze but holding the pillow against it helps. I have been walking on the treadmill for 10 minutes at a time about 3 times a day for the past several days which feels so good.

I went out of the house for the first time since coming home from the hopital today and since I had taken a pill just before I left the house, I felt nauseated and overheated and sick the whole time I was out. We managed to get what we needed to turn my 11 year old into a killer zombie for Halloween though and that's the important thing!

Hope things are going well for you. Would love to hear how each of you (and other October Sleevers) are doing. I send best wishes to each of you!

Leah

Hi Leah, my October 17 Sleeve Sister!!

Sounds like your post surgery experience was very difficult which I am really sorry to hear. But it also sounds like things are getting slightly better every day, which is good. Hold on to the thought of your progress, and also hold on to the support of your husband which sounds like it is good. You will make it through this.

I can say a little bit about diarrhea since I have had it since I left the hospital on 10/19. It has really worn me out, and at first I thought it was normal -- you know liquids in and liquids out -- but I finally took this problem to my doctor. She thought it was lactose intollerance and told me that it was very common after all GI surgery. I was, indeed, using a lot of milk products for my liquid Protein, so I have had to change over to soy-based Protein powder and soy milk and Lactaid. Apparantly it takes about a week to improve, but I have noticed an improved difference. This doesn't happen after I take my medication like it happens to you, and if you only have it ast that time, and no other time, you may have a totally different situation from lactose intolerance. I just thought I would tell you my experience if it may help you.

I have even more experience with anxiety than I do with diarrhea wacko.png, and if medication helps, it is good. It doesn't mean you have to take it forever. You are going through a difficult time. Everyone responds to things differently. You had major surgery, and this is how you respond to your particular circumstances. That is totally okay. It also sounds like the medication is working in that you were able to leave your house for the first time since surgery and do the awsome motherly task of getting your son ready for Halloween!!Banane55.gif Yippee!!

And, by the way, you are doing much better than me in the exercise department!! 10 min at a time on the treadmill. I have to admit that I have trouble walking 10 min at a time.

So hang in there. You should be losing some weight by now, aren't you? That should make you feel good!!

All good things to come for you, my dear,

Phyllis, aka Hopeful Spirit

Hi Ladies,

Almost 2 weeks out and I am feeling much better too. I am not experiencing any pain and seem to be tolerating most foods. Dairy products make me a little nauseous, so I am steering clear of those for awhile. I am having the exact opposite problem in the means of diarrhea. It's been almost two weeks since I have been able to go to the bathroom??? Dr. just suggested I use collace.. which hasn't worked. I really didn't know what to expect actually. Makes me a little nervous. Exercising is going great.. Dr. says I have to wait another two weeks to be cleared for heavy exercise again.. I can't wait!! Keep up the good work everyone! Our 1 month is coming up quickly.. I think everyone will be SOO happy!!

Gunning, 2005. Sorry to hear about the plumbing problem. If it isn't one thing it is another. If the collace doesn't work after 2 weeks, our program at MGH here in Boston suggests a little bit of Milk of Magnesia. That may do it.

Keep up the good work!!

Phyllis

Hi Gunning2005, I haven't had to try it myself but my doctor also recommended Milk of Magnesia if no BM for a few days. You might check with your doctor and then give it a try. Constipation is sure no fun and can wear on you as more time passes.

Hi Sleevers!! Well all of our October friends have been sleeved. Im so happy to read everyone's progress and love that everyone is being honest about their obstacles.

I am doing great! Tonight for dinner I had grilled Talapia and creamed spinach...IT WAS MAGNIFICENT!! Feeling so good to actually chew food again. And get this: as of yesterday I weigh........199lbs!!!!! OMG SOOOOO HAPPY TO SEE ONDERLAND!

I had a few days where I hated my husband...LOL. Its just, Hes 175lbs and eats WHATEVER he wants, so was feeling incredibly envious. There was one day when I heard him open a can of coke & I just had to go to my bathroom and sit there in silence for a minute. Just to clear my mind & remember why I made this decision for myself. I felt better when I stepped on the scale. :purplebananna:

Sorry for venting, but I figured that you all would be the only people who could understand what I'm going through.

Talk to you all later! ☮&♥

Hey All, I'm on day 21 after being sleeved on Oct. 18, Forest Park Hospital, Dallas Tx. Dr. Nicholson did the surgery around 2:00 pm. It is wonderful to have the last 21 days behind me and am thrilled to be able to eat soft foods. I may never drink another sweet, milky beverage..brrrrr. Except for some continued soreness in my left side I feel great. Bending over is the worst......great excuse to slack on housework! Ha. Anyway, I just got on this site a few days ago and am thrilled to find so much support and information throughout the community! Hope everyone is shrinking fast and feeling fine.

It is day 22 for me. I was sleeved on 10/19/11. It was rough going but I am slowly getting the hang of it. This community has been pretty much the only thing keeping me sane other than my husband.

Ok... My fellow sleevers, I have a question. I am 5 weeks out and the past 2 days I have had NO energy. I have not changed my diet and am still taking my vits. Is this normal?? Anyone else experienced this???

I have experienced this and it was due to not getting enough Water, dehydration. That is not to say that this is what you are going through but it is somewhere to start looking at least...

Now that the holiday is over, if it's not a deficit in fluids, then you should probably contact your doctor to see if it is something else.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
