Swallowing prescription pills post- surgery?

Recommended Posts

I know post surgery you're on a pretty strict diet of clear fluids, but what do you do about prescription pills?

I am on thyroid, which are solid pills.

I was also wondering if you were allowed to suck on mints after surgery. I am in peoples faces all day long (I'm a facialist) and I really would feel bad having nasty breath!

I didn't have problems swallowing pills whole as soon as I left the hospital. They gave us antibiotics, PPI, pain meds, all in pill form and I had no problem.

The mint thing, I don't think it's a problem? There's sugra free you can try. Goog luck!

:)

Good to hear Kelly! Youre always quite helpful.

I was concerned the menthol or peppermint oil could be a tissue irritant (like alcohol) and therefore possibly not allowed.

HI, I was put on pneumonia pills 5 days post op, and they were impossible to take crushed, soooooo nasty. My surgeon had me cut the pills into quarters for a few days, I then was able to take the pills whole at about 2 weeks post op.

Do not know about peppermint, but I was having sugar free dentyne fire gum and that didnt aggravate my sleeve at all.

That's good to hear about the gum! I was fearful the ingredients would somehow be abrasive or irritating, but considering dentyne fire is fairly intense, I'm not too worried.

My thyroid pills are small and taste slightly sweet- I could easily chew them if need be. I've had times where I've ran out of my thyroid meds, and substituted with supplements- very bad idea. I know I won't be ok without them, so I'm glad crushing will be an option.

Sorry to hear about the pneumonia, I hope you're ok now and recovering well.

Please consult a pharmacist; not all pills can be crushed safely. Many pills have special coatings to make them disolve further down in your digestive system. If yours is sweet, chances are that it has a coating, but it is possible that the coating is just for taste. But it should take no time or money to ask a pharmacist about your specific meds.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
