how much can you eat?

Recommended Posts

I seem to be able to eat more than I think I should be able too. For example a whole granola bar....I'm 8 weeks out. Do you think I've stretched my sleeve?

It is a pretty much a fallacy that you can stretch your sleeve. food passes pretty quickly through the stomach and those people in hot dog eating contests don't really permanently stretch their stomach.

At four weeks I was eating a whole Protein bar which is as big as a granola bar.

Think of it this way, your stomach is the size of a medium banana and a granola bar will fit in even without being chewed.

Think in terms of volume not ounces.

You are doing fine, I am at week 9 and I eat more than a granola bar for my meals.

That is definately more than I could eight weeks after surgery. One of my favorite sayings is: "Just because you can, doesn't mean you should" I'm sixteen months out - I still keep an on line log and when I'm at home, I weigh or measure my food.

My surgeon's physician assistant said that you CAN stretch out your new tummy, just like you could stretch your tummy prior to surgery. It you are eating Protein like you should, the point is for it to stay there and keep you full as long as possible. With by-pass, I think food "by-passes" a lot and moves on out quicker, but we have a fully funtioning stomach, just smaller. Ask your doctor, his nurse, physician's asst. - someone there in his office.

2 years out and can still only have about 6 oz at a time. 1/2 to 3/4 of a Breakfast taco (never finish the whole thing) AND if i do eat these days it's either one or the other but not both. . .for example, if there is chicken, mashed potatoes and vegatables for dinner, I have to make the choice of what i really want, so I'll usually pick the chicken, then after that if i have room and am not sliming yet, i'll go for a tablespoon of veggies. Usually i don't finish that. As far as sandwiches. . . well I can only use those 100 calorie orowheat thin things and that is only 1/2 - 3/4 of it. i've noticed they now have even smaller orowheat thins at 50 calories each. . . ummm maybe i'll try those. . . good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
