how soon can you drive after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I went for my 15 day, staple removing appt this morning and my Dr. released me to drive today. I was told the reason for not being allowed to drive is because if you were to be in an accident and your airbag deploys it will hit you right at your surgery site and create some serious damage.

Hope this helps!

As soon as I was off pain meds I could drive. I stopped taking pain meds on day 4. You may not feel up to it until a week or two out but dr. said I could when I felt up to it. He reminded me it was against the law to drive on pain meds. Hope that helps!

Next day if I wanted according to doctor. I went in for surgery on Thursday, released on Sunday, drove on Monday. Did not have a problem driving. I have a van so I didn't have to bend into a small car, don't know if that would make a difference.

I was off my pain meds around day 4 or 5 but I din't drive until day 10 post-op. It really wasn't that bad. But still...be careful!

All the best,

Niki

I was cleared for driving as soon as I was off pain meds. My surgery was on a Tuesday. My last dose of pain meds was on the following Friday. I drove on Saturday. I also drove myself - by myself for my 1 week followup appt which was a 3 hour round trip with no problems. Good luck!!

I was released on Wed and was driving on Friday. Only restriction was pain meds but hadn't taken them since the day of surgery. I was still pretty tired the day I was released and the day after. You need to make sure you are alert enough to carefully drive. Good luck to you!

As soon as I was off pain meds I was ok to drive... but let me tell ya'.. every little bump in the road hurt bad! But then again, I have a very LOW pain tolerance. I stayed on my pain meds for at least a week...

I was allowed to drive as soon as I was off my pain meds. I took my last dose of pain meds the day after my surgery. However, I didn't drive until my one week follow-up appt.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
