The only thing I would change is that I would have done the Optifast pre-operatively for two months, not just two weeks. I lost over 22lb in those 2 weeks and, had i known the huge advantage I would have gained by fasting longer, I would have done it. Starting from a higher weight, I would say it should be a necessity, as my weight loss slowed down after the first 3 months when I began to be able to eat more. I tried exercise but couldn't stick to much more than a long walk once or twice a day, so weight loss slowed down and finally plateaued.

If you have a LOT of weight to lose, more fasting is better, because there is a limited window of opportunity to lose the majority of your weight, after which the losses slow down due to larger capacity for eating again, I would recommend Optifast for a long as you can stand it.

I am not suggesting that you fast for any longer than your doctor recommends, but it certainly would help if you were to fast for longer than 2.5 weeks. One woman I met in a forum was very overweight and her doctor insisted that she do months of fasting. She did it too. The fasting that I did and our surgeon recommends is the plan as suggested in the Optifast plan and it includes one meal a day where you can have steam veggies and things. I found it soooo hard the first 3 days, and then it got easier and easier. I regretted that I didn't start it sooner. I lost so much weight on it. Normally I could never stick such a diet, but knowing that you will go straight to surgery and keep that weight off is such a psychological driver...I found I could manage it without cheating because I knew it would end and things would be out of my hands once I'd had the sleeve. Other times I have tried to do these types of fasts and I haven't even lasted one day!

All the best

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
