Post op diet - need suggestions

Recommended Posts

I have 21 days of full liquid diet of which I have completed 5 days. I stocked up on chicken broth, but it just doesn't taste good anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to eat? I can have anything as long as it can go through a strainer. Any help would be much appreciated!

Egg drop Soup, hot and sour soup, chicken and Beef Consume,Tomato soup- - creamed Soups through a strainer- like cream of broccoli, chicken, mushroom-

I used those but honestly to me they just tasted like flavored milk- but I loved the egg drop and chicken consume

My doctor was a little more open by second week. He suggested real Soup pureed, in fact anything if I could put it into a blender. Truthfully I saw the doctor at 14 days postop and by that time I had progressed to soft foods like poached eggs, soft scrambled even real meat chewed so much it was like pureed.

Else try applesauce, Jello, put some stuff into your soup stock to add some flavoring.

Yogurt Smoothie: Blend 1/2 cup Fat Free Greek Yogurt with at least 20 grams of Protein per cup, 1/8 C. orange juice, 1/4 C Water, a couple of frozen or fresh strawberries, and Splenda to taste ( I like three tablespoons).

Split Pea Soup: Andersons Split Pea with Bacon has 5 grams of protein per half cup

Decaf Soy Milk or Skim Milk Latte: 8 grams of protein per cup of milk

I'm new to this site, however, I'm 2 1/2 weeks post op and I'm going crazy. Can anyone give me ideas on meals once I start puree. Also during the puree stage is it safe to eat egg salad, tuna, oatmeal, or grits. I am open for any suggestions

Can you do Protein Shakes? I would think so. They are filling and get you the Protein you need. They will also help you fill full.

During this time, you will be losing weight and I would hate to think your Dr would want you possibly losing muscle mass now, because post-surgery, it is almost impossible not to lose muscle.

There is a great cookbook for wsl called Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook for Dummies (the typical dummie book ) It has sections on smooth foods, pureed, soft etc. and is very educational. I got mine at B&N, but they also hae it at Amazon. They also have another bool for wsl for dummies, so make surenyou are getting the one with the food on the cover, not the pair of jans.

I'm 4 days out and couldn't handle the Tomato soup/applesauce/yogurt bland foods anymore so I took advice from another poster and got hot & sour egg Soup last night. It was DELICIOUS and hit the spot. It actually made me feel normal...I know that sounds odd but I've had a hard time getting anything down and this was perfect. I picked out all the mushroom chunks, though, you don't want to eat that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
