In July both my wife and I decided to have weight loss surgery. It has been frusterating to say the least. Before we could ever meet with the surgeon we had to attend a seminar explaining the procedures. At our first doctor appointment I did not qualify, my BMI was 39.5. Thankfully the nurse had my wife put her purse on the scale and that put me above the 40 BMI that the insurance was asking for. We each did our phyc evaluation and attended a class where we met with a dietician. We were originally told that we were going to have to do 6 months doctor supervised dieting but upon reading over the insurance requirements we soon discovered that they had recently changed their policies and now they do not require and dieting (Good news for us). All of our information was submitted to the insurance over 3 weeks ago and I recieved a call on friday from the insurance company stating that they never recieved it, and both of us were being given a 45 day extension. Well after talking with the doctors office they noticed that they had faxed it to the wrong number. It was faxed to the right number on Monday morning and we recieved a phone call on Wednesday from the doctors office saying that we had been approved. Finally things seem to be going right. We now have to set up a 4 hour class that talks about what we will be able to eat and then we have to start our 2 week pre-op diet. We get to pick what date we want to have the surgery when we go through the class. Could be as little at 2.5 weeks from now or maybe as long as another month. All I know is we are now one step closer to succesfully losing weigh and being able to keep it off. I am hoping we can be at or close to our target weight by May of next year when we go on our vacation.

Congradulations firefighter to you and your wife. I am an ex police officer and my surgery is scheduled for Nov. 4th. My insurance doesn't cover wls so I am self paying in Mexico. It will be great for you guys to go through this together and help one another out along the way. How exciting.

I shared your post with my husband about adding your wife's purse to your weight. We were cracking up laughing. Glad to hear that you & your wife will be having surgery soon. I am having mine next week. My husband wants to see how I do with the sleeve before making his decision for WLS. My best to both of you. Will be looking for your posts.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
