JEWELRY DURING SURGERY

Recommended Posts

Has anyone had a piece of jewelry that they were unable to remove during surgery? if so how did your surgeon treat it. I have an industrial/tragus earring that I am unable to remove and was wondering if it would be ok to leave in during the procedure,or if i would have to find a way to get it off? Thanks!!!

I had to take my nose ring out for surgery. I even changed it to a clear retainer to try and be able to leave it in but they still made me remove it. I guess it would depend on the hospital though. I was allowed to put it right back in after I woke up.

Good luck on your surgery!

I checked this week about my permanent piercing jewelry I have in and they said absolutely not, so I'm going to gave the piercing place remove it n put it back after. The surgeon said any small metal will interfere with surgical equipment, etc. It's a definately no on the perching jewelery.

I was allowed to keep silicone earskins in for my stretched lobes, but not acrylic barbells in my nipple piercings. So I think it depends on the surgical team and the jewelry.

Good luck.

I had to get silicone too.... the piercist should be able to make you up something with a flex plastic wire type thing - It actually looks like the stuff I buy for the whipper snipper

I was able to keep my nose piece in. I signed a form saying I knew the risks, which by the way are almost non existent. With surgical stainless steel or titanium piece there is really little risk at all. The excuse of interfering with equipment is like sayiny anyone with a knee of hip replacement or any thing else like that will interfere with all future surgeries. There is a minimal risk the cautery could jump to the metal but very unlikely. My surgical nurse and anestesiologist both rolled their eyes at me having to sign the form. Oh I was also able to keep a couple fresher cartilage piercings when I have my hysterectomy done several years ago.

Awesome! thats great, I actually called my surgeons office and they said it should be fine. They stated like you that there is minimal risk while keeping it in. Thanks again!

You only need to worry about it if they are using antiquated technology from the 70's or early 80's. I removed what jewelry was possible. I left my white gold ring on, and nipple rings in. Even in other surgeries I left my 000ga prince albert in, and that's with a catheter in place as well!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
