Feeling Discomfort

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I have a question that I hope someone can help me with. I have been banded for 3 weeks now everything seemed to be going along really well. I tried to eat a piece of very soft fish and well it got stuck and man oh man the pain. Needless to say I ended up sliming and then PB'ing. Every since I have felt discomfort in my chest back and under my rib cage on my port side. Is this normal for a few days after you have a slime or PB. Please any advice is welcome I am scared I might have done something when I threw up.

I have not pb'ed but I have read enough testimonies that this is normal. You need to do mushies, or liquids, for a day or two and let the swelling go down. It is a traumatic thing that happened, so the esphogus and stomach swell afterwards. Just give it some time to heal. If it continues after that go see your doctor.

Thanks for your advice. I guess I am just alittle scared that something isn't right in there. I am back on Liquids and Mushies so hopefully it will go away soon.

I did the same thing this past Saturday and today is the first day I have been able to eat without discomfort from the swelling.

I had four cc in a VanGuard on July 6th. I probably still had some swelling from the fill and that is why I got stuck. Being only three weeks out from banding you probably still have swelling also.

I am still waiting for my first fill. Did you have any kind of symptons like this before you had your fill?

Oh yeah I had the normal post surgery swelling. At one point you could hear the food go through my band like Water circling and gurgling when going down a drain.

Now I get a feeling of discomfort in my back between my shoulder blades if I eat to fast, don't chew well enough, eat food that is too hard, etc etc etc.

Have you gone back to liquids for 24 -48 hours? If not then you should and work back up to soft stuff.

It just occurred to me that I knew for sure my swelling was going down when I could do a real good deep burp again. I don't know if everybody loses the deep burping ability when swollen. But I lost it to the ummm other end when I was swollen.

yep went back to liquids and very very mushie foods. Actually today for lunch I had very running oatmeal and I think it made me feel better. The pain is starting to go away. Maybe the warmth helped me out.

Hello! I have only been banded for 2 weeks and I skipped the liquid diet. Two days after my surgery, I was starving. I could not just drink liquids anymore. I have very poor will power. Anyway, to answer your question, I had that pain at first when I took too big of bites or did not chew long enough. I usually sip some Water and it will go away. I have never thrown up before, though. Your body is diffrent than mine.

Stay on liquids until the pain is completely gone. If you have to have mushies they probably won't hurt you but you need to give your stomach plenty of rest. You're only 3 weeks post op so give yourself some extra time to heal after irritating things.

Maalox Max works wonders for irritation. My surgeon gave me a great tip: Keep the Maalox in the refridgerator and when it's time to take a dose, pour it over chipped ice, swirl it around so the Maalox is super cold, then sip it till it's gone. For some reason the super cold helps sooth the irritation much better than even just refridgerated.

Good luck and keep us updated as to how you're doing.

I like you have poor will power. I guess thats what has me at the weight I am today. I did the liquid stage for two weeks before I caved and started with soft mushie foods. But after I had the episode with the fish that scared me and I went right back to full liquids. I don't go back for a checkup with my doc until the 27th and I am supposed to be still on liquids until then. But I am starving. I know I won't be able to hold out.

Thanks Donna I will try the Maalox. Having you guys to talk to helps me so much. I think if I didn't have this board to look to for answers my poor doc's phone would be constantly ringing

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
