Just noticed that the thirties forum isn't used very often. I would love to get to know more people here. I am a 31 year old female that is preparing for surgery. I don't have a date yet, but just finished my last step so it should be soon. I have a 7 year old son and am concerned as to how he is going to react to the surgery. Do any of you have young children? How did they handle it?

Hi I'm a 33 year old mother of two. My son is 12 and my daughter is 7. I haven't decided yet what to say to them...but most likely I will tell them after. I don't want them to worry or be scared...tough decision!

Hey, Ivy. I'm 38 and have a two and a half year old....luckily don't have to explain much to him :) Just that Mommy is getting her tummy fixed so it will be smaller! When you get approved, and if you get scheduled for October, come and join us on the October 2011 board. Good luck!

Well guess it may sound bad that I did lie about the procedure but it was 1/2 true i told them the part about me needing my gallbladder out and a repaired hernia but left out the sleeve part. They contribute my weight loss to my healthy eating and exercise but I am also a slow loser too so maybe that's why its less obvious. But that’s just what i said. Good Luck , Oh and i have 4 daughters and i am 35

I am 36 and have 4 boys - a 7 year old, a 5 year old and identical twin 2 year olds. I was very open and honest about my surgery with them ... to the point that I took a drawing of a body/stomach and a pencil and showed them exactly what the doctor was going to do. I also told them why he was doing it ... to help me lose weight so that I could be around longer and play with them more.

After my procedure, I showed them my incisions and such.

They were more inquisitive than worried and great through the whole ordeal.

Thanks for all the good advice. I think I am going to take the direct approach with my 7 year old. I think he will be very inquisitive about it too. I am approved now, but may have to wait until January (I'm on a long waiting list). We will see! I will let you all know how the conversation goes.

Hi i am 36 yr old with a 8 yr daughter, and i have prepared her by talking with her about the process and allowing her to ask questions. She is more scared about me getting shots and needles in my arm lol. She knows i will be in the hosptial for a day and when i come home she has to be careful around me.

Hello there! I am 31 yrs old, and have a six year old son. He is great and helps me out! It's funny, on Easter, I asked him if I could have a little taste of his Cadbury egg and he said "NO! Too many carbs!" It's amazing how much they understand. Good luck with your journey, and keep in touch!

Hi everyone! I'm 32 and have a teenager and a 5 yr old. I'm tentatively having surgery sometime this summer. I have my surgical consult in a couple of weeks then it's waiting for insurance approval. I'm excited but also nervous.

Hey! I'm 33 (will be 34 on the 25th). :) I have a 17 year old and a 14 year old. I was blessed with boys. I was pretty open with them. My youngest was a little apprehensive- he would often ask why I even needed the surgery. Sweet kid.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
