Mental problems

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I got the vsg on Monday 9/26/11. All the way up to the time they put me to sleep I wasent 100% that I wanted to do it I was like 98%, well I woke up and it was done. Im now 6 days post op and Im really struggling mentaly. I cant stop waking up and going to sleep thinking about all the things that can possibly go wrong from not getting enough liquids down to possible stomach leaks and liver problems in the future. I wake up or go to sleep freaking out big time. During the day I seem to cope pretty good its just reaaly bad in the morning and when I go to bed. Has anyone gone through anything like this. Other than the mental aspect I'm feeling pretty darn good. I dont want food but I'm missing it. Yes I've done a ton of resurch for over a year however I never came across this problem.

I think your mental unease could be attributable to a reaction to the meds and anasthesia. I fell asleep at random time for a couple of weeks, and had disturbing dreams of the surgery / after effects during the unplanned naps. Do you normally worry about other decisions you have made, or is this a one time occurrence of post-decision worry? It is also common to have some "what have I done to myself?" second thoughts in the week or two after surgery. This worrying you are doing could be how you are manifesting this.

Try to reassure yourself that you will monitor your recovery closely, and any worrysome symptom you will follow up on. This forum is a great source of opinion on post-surgery symptoms that might bother you. If you put a topic out here with a title like "Recently had surgery, should I call my doctor?" you will get quick responses from people. This sight also has a search capability that you could use to look for topics on your symptom. Also, your surgeon's office will be happy to answer questions - mine did.

Good Luck

I have dealt with anxiety over the yrs and I do tend to be a worrier, but I have felt more relieve of anxiety over being sleeved than increased. I had wanted to have it for so long though. Were you a worrier before surgery? Just try to focus on getting your Fluid in now, and you may not be able to get it all in, just do the best you can. Try to relax and not stress, it can't be helping your recovery. If something happens, then cross that bridge when you get to it. But remember the risks of this surgery is low, and complications are rare. See someone about it if it's really getting to you. Also, are you taking your Vitamins? Sometimes anxiety can be caused by deficiencies in the B vitamins, might want to google that. And as someone mentioned, it could be a reaction to anesthesia in your system still. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.

Make an appointment and discuss this with your surgeon. Every week I felt better and better. I was worried about things too but everyday it got a little better. Definitely see your doc. He can reassure you...and stay on this site. So much great info and people in the same boat with you. Big huggs!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
