What do I have to look forward to??

Recommended Posts

Just want to hear some personal experiences.

What was length of hospital stay?

How did you feel, immediately upon awakening and as time progressed, pain, eating, etc...??

Any complications??

Just want to here what to expect, don't worry, can't scare me out of it, I have a high tolerance for pain, just want to be prepared.

My surgery was 2 in the afternoon and I was discharged at 630 the next day. No complications at all. When I woke up from anesthesia was the worst pain I had post op but it was still tolerable. Gettimg up and down during post op with IV fluids was tricky. Pain wasnt bad after leaving hospital, by week 2 I was pretty much pain free. I was on Clear Liquids for a week and had no problems getting them in or keeping them down. I haven't vomited once as I am about 5 weeks out.

I had so little pain and felt no different that i didn't think they did the surgery until I felt the bandages on my stomach. I felt so good that I left the hospital the next day. I didn't even need any pain medication. I was just sore for a few weeks. Eating took some time, I drank a lot of hot tea. Good luck, be positive and you will be fine.

I had my surgery at 8:30 a.m. I was in recovery by 11 a.m. and in my hospital room by noon. I stayed 2 nights in the hospital - they would have sent me home after 1 night, but I decided to stay the extra night because I was REALLY tired (they made me get up and walk every two hours the first day/night). I had little to no incision pain . . . the meds in the hospital kept the pain under control the first few days, and I think I only took one dose of my pain meds once I got home. The gas pain was pretty overwhelming but getting up and walking really helped with that, and it passed pretty quickly.

I was on clear liquids for 3 days and then went to full liquids, my transitions between food phases have been great. I haven't had any vomiting or problems with transitioning to any new foods. I consider myself VERY lucky in that regard.

At nearly 2 months out I'm walking/jogging 3 miles 3-4 times a week, taking a strength training class 2 times a week, and feel like a million bucks. This is the best decision I ever made!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
