Ladies: WLS/Breakthrough Bleeding/Seasonale

Recommended Posts

My band surgery was in September 2005 and I have been on Seasonale brand birth control for 2 years. I have lost 95 lbs in 10 months. After my last period, I had a week with no issues and then started breakthrough bleeding.

The breakthrough has been going on for 3 weeks now from extremely light to somewhat moderate. How annoying! I have 9 more weeks of pills before I should be on my cycle and I do not want to continue this breakthrough for that long.

Has anyone experienced this after a big drop in weight?

Any thoughts?

I went off the Seasonale earlier this year. I did, from time to time, experience the break through bleeding. The longest it lasted was 2 wks. I think it's our bodies way of telling us that it needs to have a cycle. I went off of it b/c we want more children and I was concerned it may have an impact on eggs & such....only a rumor I've heard from word of mouth and can't get any health care professional to back up this claim. Let me tell you though, I HATE my TOM and every month I ask myself why I'm not taking the Seasonale. I tell myself I'm doing the right thing. Hmmm....maybe not.....I don't really know for sure.

I was banded on May 26, 2006 so the band/weight loss did not have an impact on the Seasonale. It will be interesting to hear other responses on this subject.

Weightloss definitely impacts your hormone levels. BCP definitely manipulate hormones. The connection between the two could be none, or could be all - only your doc can say for sure.

I haven't experienced anything hormonal (that I can tell anyway) with my weightloss, but I'm not on BCP, either. However I was on BCP during my weight gain, and had to stop taking them because I starting getting completely spontaneous superficial thrombophlebitis -- in really weird places.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
