How Soon Were You Back To Work?

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I'm new to the forum and in the beginning stages of preparing for surgery. The biggest hurdle is over though, as my insurance has approved the surgery (it took them 24 hrs!) and now I find myself putting off my consult with the surgeon because during this time he likes to talk about suregry dates and I am just unsure as to when I should have it done. My deciding factor for a surgery date will be based on how long it takes to recooperate. So, if you would all be so kind as to share your post-op recovery timeframes and stories I would greatly appreciate it!

If i had a desk job or a job without lifting I could have went back after 2 weeks. However, I am a nurse on a busy hospital floor and do a lot of lifting. With the large hernia I had repaired I am going to be off 6 weeks to be sure I don't damage anything. Recovery has been easy!

Thanks so much for your reply!! I do work for a very busy hospital but fortunately for me, I work in billing so my job is sedimentary. Your reply gives me hope that maybe I can have a speedy recovery too!:D Thanks a bunch!

I had surgery on 2/22 of this year. I waited to go back to work until after my 3 week checkup. After that, I worked remotely from home for the rest of that week. (I have a two hour drive each way). Then, the next week, I worked 4-6 hours a day, and stayed in town at a hotel so I didn't have to drive the four hours each day. My doctor didn't want me riding in a car for over and hour without getting out of the car and taking a break and walking around (clot worries). I didn't have any problem with recovery.

Good Luck!

I went into surgery, Thursday, August 4th. Out of hospital on Sunday, August 7th. Driving and working a couple hours on Monday, August 8th. I own my own business so had to get some work done at office and did some at home with my laptop. Found it easy to drive and sit up after surgery.

I work on my feet all day, bending and reaching, so I waited 2 weeks. If I worked a desk job, I could have easily gone back in one week.

I have a desk job and I went back in 9 days. I was really tired though. I would suggest half days for a week if possible.

I also work in medical billing and was back in a week. I felt pretty good, would get tired occasionally. I also would get "antsy" so I would have to get up and walk around every now and again. Otherwise I felt better than before surgery.

I am a nurse on a busy floor and work 12-14 hour shifts, so I took off 4 weeks which was perfect. If I had a desk job though, I would have been ready at 2 weeks. Good luck to you!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
