Hello all!

I'm Meli, 33, a life long battle with weight, PCOS, Metabolic X Syndrome, Type II diabetes and so on... I think the hardest part has been 5 years of trying to conceive with no luck--- tried everything short of IVF. I have considered WLS in the past, but was not fond of re-routing intestines, it just sounds really bad--- so I was glad to learn about the VSG. My fertility doctor actually mentioned to me last Tuesday that perhaps it is time to consider surgery, needless to say that evening I was in a seminar with, Dr. Anderson, on the latest WLS. I have my appointment with the nutritionalist and pyschologist next week and if my medical records come together as planned and insurance is on board, we have a hopeful surgery date for November 2011! In the mean time I want to know the ins and outs of this surgery, what you didn't expect, what you have really appreciated, and how you cope with any thing that I may encounter early on or even further on in the process! Thank you for your time!

Girl I' right there with you. I've stuggled with my weight my whole life! The only time I was small and felt normal was after losing 80 lbs back in High school and well I didn't do that the healthy way. I have heard that a lot of people have a much easier time getting pregnant after wls because your body is in better control of it's hormones. You are lucky you don't have to do a diet for insurance approval. I had to do six months of a supppervised diet and after jumping through ten other hoops I'm finally approved and have a date. Good luck to you I hope you don't have any problems with approval!

It sounds like you will not have any problems with approval. As regard to your Diabetes, read my blog(www.kemo46.blogspot.com), see how the surgery changed my life. You are on the right track.

Today is post -surgery day #4; I would do this all over without hesitation! I have/had the same co-morbidities as you...add in hypothyroidism, arthritis in lower spine and a host of other issues.

A good WLS has a wonderful, informed staff that will be able to answer any/all of your questions both pre an post surgery and this forum and others will be a great feedback support system. I was in the hospital for 2+ days instead of overnight due to my nurse not paying attention to my doctors orders for my first round of Clear liquids. My doctors team was not comfortable releasing me until they saw how i tolerated processing Clear Liquids. For most people, the biggest side effect from surgery is usually nausea and vomiting so they want to make sure they send you home tolerating clear liquids.< /p>

Two things I didn't expect...having to really pay attention to my daytime nurse as she seemed to have a focusing/staying on task issue; my night nurse was an angel sent straight from God so it made up for it LOL. The other thing was how sore my stomach muscles were. My doctor said that a lot of his patients say it feels like they did three days of continuous sit ups and I felt that was so true! I still can't sleep on my side, but movement (getting in and out of chairs, bed) is getting easier.

Good luck!

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
