Question about Prilosec

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My surgeon did not prescribe a ppi and I had some issues with acid. They told me to just take TUMS but that didn't work so well. So I bought Prilosec/Omeprazole over the counter. The instructions say to take one a day for 14 days and then to stop, and I can take it again in 4 months. I took my last pill two days ago and I am already feeling the acid rearing its ugly head. I know a lot of you are on a prescription for Omeprazole so I basically just want you guys to tell me it's ok for me to go get another box of the OTC stuff until I can get in touch with my surgeon on Monday. I think the otc stuff is 20mg and a lot of your prescriptions are for 40mg, or 20mg twice a day, so I'm hoping it'll be safe for me to continue with the one 20mg per day which works just fine for me.

I know you guys aren't doctors and I need to talk to mine, but any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rachel

Hi! My surgeon didn't put me on it, either, and I took 20 mg every night for 3 months or so. It worked like a charm. You do need to switch to a calcium citrate instead of Calcium carbonate, since the stuff in Prilosec makes it hard for your body to get the calcium out of the carbonate formulation (so I've read). I took myself off of it about 3 weeks ago and have been fine.

I took 20mg a day for about 7 months, then switched to taking one every other day. No problems with acid. I'll probably try stopping them completely when this bottle runs out.

I have not been sleeved yet, but have been taking Prilosec once a day for years. My doctor knows this and has not suggested that I stop it. I don't think it hurts to continue, in my opinion, and this medication brings a lot of relief.

Thanks everybody. I suspected it would be fine but it's nice to get some reassurance!

I was sent home with a one month supply of omeprazole 20mg (one a day, mornings) and a prescription for a further three months.

I don't generally have an acidic tum, nor do I suffer from reflux or anything. I imagine it's just a precautionary measure and to permit my sleeve to heal.

my doc actually said that continuing the PPI (proton pump inhibitor-the prilosec) helps to heal the stomach faster because the decrease in stomach acid results in a happier tummy. also the decrease in stomach acid controls tummy pains, hunger pains etc as well.

i havent had any in a few days but i might start taking it again, im 2 1/2 weeks out and doing pretty well, but my tummy is happier on it.

Can you take prilosec twice a day if needed? I take it in the mornings but still wake up in the middle of the night suffering!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
