How is weight loss for people over 50?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Yes to mind hunger being a trigger. I am changing, not quickly, but changing, nevertheless, a lifetime pattern of stuffing, then starving to "make up" for the guilt of stuffing. My eating has never been normal. My thoughts about food have never been normal. It is my challenge to address my eating behaviors. Currently, I am logging my food, and trying to go with five - 300 calorie or less feedings (three meals with two snacks). I eat much more Protein, shy away from, but still crave carbs and chocolate. Yes, I can use substitutes. No, even though I feel full after 3 oz of chicken, it isn't the same chemical rush that I used to experience with high carb and fat foods. So be it. I am sad that my life has changed by missing the rush or sugar high, but so happy to be living a more realistic and healthy way. I deserve a healthy life. We all do.

Hugs I love being connected to all of you,

Michelle

Michelle - I understand/relate to this 100% - on a Friday & or/Sat nite after a long stressful week - there was nothing better than sitting down to tamale pie and pigging out - or making brownies and eating them - heck once i just made the batter and ate it without cooking it - just thinking about it makes my mouth water.... Yes - high carbs and fat - I love butter so much I think I am Paula Dean's daughter:p.

Well, it's time to go home to my fish, veggies & 1/2 cup rice - talk to you all later - I am pooped today don't know if I will go to the gym or not - will see.

Wow! I can relate to what you all are saying about eating and wanting more. I am finding that within the last week, I am doing more PBing and belching. If I wait a bit, I can go back to my meal and finish it. I've gotten away from focusing on low carbs, and can tell the difference. I eat carbs, and I am looking for food constantly.

I did very well the first 2 months after I was banded (8/30/07). Then after my first fill, I ate like there was no tomorrow and gained 10 pounds. Now with my 2nd fill, I'm noticing changes more this last week than I did previously. Can't eat as much, some foods get stuck when previously they didn't. I'm due for a fill next week, and am looking forward to it.

I have a 14cc band with only 3.5 cc in now. I wish he'd just put in about 5cc and get it over with.

Thanks for the insight from you all, you rock!

I'm going to check that book out and probably buy it.

Very often I find myself wanting something. I won't be hungry or thirsty. It's sort of like a driving force to fill up something in me that is missing. food becomes the answer. When I quit smoking it was like that. I'd go through these cravings when my favorite light up time was or when I felt stress.

With the cigarettes I just turned my back on the craving. But I haven't been doing that with food. What I am doing is grabbing something low calorie rather than high calorie and I grab a lot less. But I am still giving in to the addiction. Perhaps there will be good info in that book.:hungry:

I just had a fill today. I am not the least bit hungry. Yet, all I can think about is chocolate ice cream. Yes, it's all in the head.

I have to keep telling myself "nothing tastes as good as thin will feel"

Denise, glad to hear you got your fill today. I know you've been ready for some time. Hang in there with the head hunger. I was just searching threads for emotional/head hunger. That is going to be my biggest challenge. Best of luck with your new fill....you're so close to your goal. You'll get there now!

Wow! You look great! It's so nice to have before and after pictures. I don't have a digital camera. I hardly ever let anyone take pictures of me.

We have both lost about the same amount. I hope to start losing again now that I have a new fill. I haven't lost anything since Sept.

Doesn't it feel great to be wearing new clothes and feeling so much better about ourselves?!

Yep Denise - I am INSPIRED by the weight loss - this is the most weight i have ever lost - well 250 was my highest weight too. the most I have ever lost was about 40 back in the late 80's early 90's and the was with the help of DRUGS... I am so inspired that I got up this morning at 4:15 and went to the gym at 5 cuz I won't be able to go tonite - for me exercise is a must ... ...

Hey, you have got a point. We should be here, helping each other out. I am still with bad reflux and am defilled. And it is the Xmas season, the time of year when I skid into my annual depression :) and only want to carb it, candy it, and guzzle too much scotch. :help: And I haven't sent out a single bluddy Xmas card! :omg: Xmas is always Angst City for me. And the weather has been lousy this year and now that I am normo-sized I actually suffer from the cold. :phanvan Good thing I see a psychologist, eh. She has told me to avoid going to the in-laws and this has taken considerable pressure off the Green. :whoo:I am planning to spend Xmas Eve, the in-law fest, at home watching DVDs and eating something healthy. :D I just haven't told the mate, yet.

Indio, you look fabulous, grrl. :) Congratulations to you, sez Green.

I'm 65 and I am trying to have it done.

I went to a Gastric Bypass & Banding support group meeting at CMMC in Jackson, MS on 12-11-2007. I'm waiting on the Medicare "Seal of Excelents" for CMMC. They said it should be any day now. Other than that, nothing new. faint.gif

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
