How is weight loss for people over 50?

Recommended Posts

No, you aren't crazy, Indio. I remember that conversation but I'm not sure it was on this thread. Out of town now and don't have time to look for it on this computer but I'll check it out tomorrow if you haven't resolved it by then. Have you tried going to Green's name and looking at all of her posts? That's what I'd do if I had time...good luck!

Momlambert

Yep i did all that (quickly but did it) - thank you for rembering this conversation.. I looked all over the place - I know Denise was in on the conversation and maybe BJean - so I guess that's why i thought it was this tread... Thanks all I neede was for someone to tell me - this actually did happen :) after looking and not finding it ...

THANKS !!!!!

I was told that since I have the band..I have to have a prep for 3 days because we can't drink as much and will get dehydrated.

I haven't asked my band doctor about it since he's 2 1/2 hours away from me and I couldn't *drive home* after.

So...anyone have the colonoscopy AFTER being banded?

I had a colonscopy last year and it was a walk in the park--I don't remember a thing until it was over although it was just light sedation. The worst part was the preparation for it--oh man! Drinking the stuff, enema, etc. Far worse than the procedure itself. My father died last week of colon cancer--never had a colonoscopy so you can bet I'll have one every time the doctor says it's time (which I understand is usually every five years). Good luck!

Momlambert

I am so very sorry for the loss of your Dad:girl_hug::):girl_hug:

Mine died 15 yrs ago from complication of a burst colon - combined w/heart problems.

I didn't realize that househuntres was talking about after banding - ya i don't know how you would drink all that stuff with the band and to have to do it over 3 days w/no eating Yuk... Well, I think I don't have to go back for 10 yrs - but if its 5 - i will do it again - better safe than sorry..

Again, My prayrer and thought are with you during this difficult time...

I read in a magazine (don't ask which one) that they have a pill now that is used as a prep. Maybe that is the way to go for us. Ask you doctor.

I think that they have come up with better things for the prep. Mine wasn't bad. It was a tiny bottle of something that was ginger flavored so i mixed it ginger ale. It was easy to get down. Not fun sitting in the bathroom all day though.

I don't know where Green is. I am anxious to hear about it too.

Ok good now i have 2 people telling me I'm not crazy - I looked for the thread but couldn't find it - If she had any resufacing I have heard that is the worst part.

Green we are thinking about you hope it all went well.:)

I was going to have a colonoscopy the same day as banding; however, the anesthetist wasn't too hot on the idea. He thought I'd be too dehydrated. He said they'd have to do the colonoscopy first and keep my hydrated during the procedure and then move on to the banding, but he said he wouldn't recommend it. My surgeon was going to do both, but, since the anesthetist didn't agree, I've decided to wait to have my colonoscopy in January. Why can't anything be simple? I don't like having to make these medical decisions.

Found it!

This is the latest TABLET prep for a colonoscopy.

Lots of tablets to take, I think that's why one Dr. said it will take 3 days of prep for lap band patients.

It NEEDS to be done though. Anyone after 50...Take care of yourself!!!

Thank you all for your condolences and well wishes. Today has been especially difficult for me and I have no idea why--hidden triggers, I guess.

Thanks for checking in Green! We missed you. Congrats on another giant step taken. Hope your recovery goes well and you are back to your old (well, not so old!) better self soon. Take it easy!

Green, glad you're doing well. Bet you'll look like a million bucks soon!

Indio - don't let them fool you - you ARE crazy!!

Momlambert, I'm so sorry for your loss; losing parents is tough. I lost my mom to cancer. It's a horrible disease and makes the caregivers feel so helpless. You have my sympathy.

Hi Everyone!

Doing ok. My mom just had a hip replacement, so it is hard to focus on myself, but I am trying to stay the course. I do eat more when I am around my mom and sis. They are very food focused, mom would rather ask me about my fills rather than deal with her surgery. She is having trouble getting out of bed, but walking ok.

My IRS audit is Wednesday. Wish me luck! I have several notebooks that I hope I can dazzle the auditor with. Some of it is near and dear to my heart. My retirement scapbook, with pic of the kids I taught and their notes to me that show how much stuff I did for them.

Green - You must have been a beautiful baby..... da...da... Look at you now, well, soon. You will be grateful and glad that you were so brave to go for it. Hugs.

Be well,

Michelle

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
