How is weight loss for people over 50?

Recommended Posts

Crabcake

I only have my Grandson (16 yrs) with me and he is so skinny ... and he and i don't eat the same things so - I just won't be buying the junk...

(hopefully i don't have a weak moment in the store or go in hunger like i do now)

That's good. My DH has a sweet tooth and so do I, so when he brings it home, it's sometimes difficult for me to ignore. He's been really supportive though and he should be able to have things he wants w/out worrying about me cheating. So I don't complain and I try to be good!

You have me cracking up wink.gif.. Yea Alaska sound good about right now..

I guess we will be on the computer 24/7 just to keep from eating - but i also have a problem in the middle of the night... How about you

Indiogirl, my worst time for eating is in the evening. I can do pretty good during the day. We can just support each other as we lose and plan our trip to Alaska. Won't Marcy be surprised:heh::biggrin1:

I am glad to hear from all of you who have had the surgery that this compulsion to stuff myself will improve. That is the goal surgery.

Hi Everyone!

I think it is never TOO LATE to take care of yourself. We all DESERVE A HEALThY LIFE!

BJean - you are always very funny. Between you and green I just keep laughing. I have already figured out that part of my journey will include a face and neck lift. I am not sure about the Tummy Tuck. I will have to get those pounds off first and stay at a weight for more than two minutes. I have had two fills, but no restriction. I think the last fill completely missed the mark, so I have another one this week and we'll just have to see where I am.

I look around at women our age and they look older, sagging chins, wrinkled necks, I think it sucks that aging does this to women. Many men look better longer.

Now on a happy note, last week before the 4th I got under 200 pounds. So, I feel like I am on my way. I went up to the mountains with my brother's family (three kids under 7) and my sister's family (2 kids under 5) and sprained my ankle, so the great exercising I've been doing is now on hold and I am icing and resting. Oh well, I'll be able to get back to it.

Hugs to you all, make sure to hug yourselves, we are embarking on a major journey of change.

Michelle

Yahoo, Dynamo, you da grrl! Congrats on your arrival in wonderland. :D:D:D You must continue to send us postcards from your new address, you know. :D

As for this biz of the handsome older man, well, I don't know whether that is really true. I remember an incident which occurred some years ago. My brother's kids were called to my city because my father was about to undergo emergency life-threatening surgery. While they were here they saw a middle-aged grey-haired guy driving a flashy sports car. The youngest of the three kids was both enthralled and horrified.

"That old man is driving a sports car!" she gasped. "Look! He's driving a sports car!!" :)

Sometimes the handsome older man only looks handsome to himself and to those who have had a peek at the size of his wallet. :heh:

As for those chicks who are eating too much, sounds like you all are in need of a visit to the Fill Doctor.

Hello Everyone -

Yep - I am going to the fill doc this week as a matter of fact. My week in the mountains with the family went great, but I am binge eating at night. I am not able to dump the extra calories through activity and there is some cravings I am experiencing. I think any time I get into the head hunger I need to be on the computer talking not sneaking food, which is such old behavior. It makes me sick. What is great is that we can talk about it here, and no one starts lecturing about the "should nots". Thank you for being here.

Yes, Green you're right. I can't overeat. After a meal, I am so stuffed

I can't even think about food. It's about 10:00 at night that I end

up craving something, so I have a sugar free popsicle or sugar free

fudgesicle.

okay, i'm due for surgery on tuesday, but still not 100% sure if this is the right thing. i am paying for this myself and my husband will kill me if i don't lose the weight. i only want to lose 50 pounds, which i'm hoping will be possible. i am terrified that i'm never going to be able to eat again or enjoy dinners out with friends. we rarely eat home these days. will i have to start cooking again??? i really don't want to cook anymore. has anyone regretted having done this???

I guess I am doing ok--since I just made 50 on 6-21. But I have been doing very well. I lost the 35 already since March-28.

I will have see what is going to become of the weight loss. I have just got my second fill on June 13th... I think my sweet spot will be a possible .5 to .6 cc's to be my sweet spot. That is my thought. I am not the Doctor--but i think if I can get to the 2 pounds week---I will be ok...My weight loss slowed down to 1 pound a week--but--it's averaged out to now 2.6.....

so the expected weight loss is about 1 - 2 pounds a week? is it more than that at the beginning?

Yep, 1-2 pounds a week. It'll probably be more than that in the beginning, because they put you on a liquid diet. Some doctors put you on that before the surgery, but mine didn't and it doesn't sound like yours did if your surgery is Tuesday. The first 2-3 days I was on Clear Liquids, then 3 weeks after that on full liquids (e.g., cream Soups, Protein Shakes, that kind of thing). However, someone should have told you by now that this isn't a quick fix. It's a tool (I hate hearing that, but it's true). It takes some people up to 2 years to lose all their weight. I don't know how much those people have to lose and I've heard of people losing 100 pounds in the first year, but those people are really, really working at it.

I don't say any of this to discourage you, but the band is NOT a quick fix and you should be aware of that before you have the surgery. Also, there's no guarantee. There have been people posting here that haven't lost their weight, but it has been entirely their own fault. You can't expect the band to do all the work.

I was banded May 8th. I've lost about 16 pounds and the last 2 weeks have struggled w/ the band. It's a learning process. I haven't been eating or exercising like I should, so the limited weight loss is on me. That said, I'm glad I'm banded. I've just got to figure out how to best work w/ my band. Oh, and I had doubts up till the time of surgery, so you're not alone.

Best of luck.

Ohhhh...I am so cool with what I am doing now.I looked up many results, read articles and done my correct research priot to the getting myself banded. Iam fully aware of this being a tool. I have many things I do to lose weight.Only in the summer now--I can't go to the gym. I live in a small town--without a day care.I am a single Parent--so the bike riding is helping me. I have not rode in like 4 days--but I am going back to that in the am. I am getting up at 5 am now. I am going to push the limits. If the kids are asleep--I can ride about 1 hour--right in my neighborhood. My kids wake at 9:30 to 10. So it is not a big deal. Don't worry--I am not expecting magical powers from the "Lap Band".I know that I must push it hard and push it good to get any results. I am good to go with things. I started at 273--I am now at about 235--I am not sad or discouraged at all. I just feel good that I have the means to do better than I ever did. I like eating little meals now. I actually didn't like Total or Special K or even yogurt much until I got closer to the surgery. Now I eat loads of that stuff. Catfish, Drum and a few other fish dishes are my best meals now. Some evenings when I am hungry and I am tired of eating fish, tired of yogurt--I look for a small bowl of Total, Special K or "Honey Bunches of Oats". I saw that they have only 180 calories with milk...That is sooo better than eating a "Big Mac" or something that holds 500 or more calories that I used to eat. I love going to McDonalds withj my kids and I have the apples and nuts with yogurt in the morning. It was never enough. But now I have kids who who are 11 and 9--who can out eat me anytime now. I now say--the food is for them. I buy my fish, and other foods that are light for me. All it takes it discipline. I can be honest--I am right at about 90%--that 10% needs to be worked on...

That's great! When were you banded? Did it take you a while to get to the right fill level? I'm going in for #2 tomorrow. Hope it does the trick!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
