How is weight loss for people over 50?

Recommended Posts

Margi , How are you losing so much so fast? What are you eating? I was banded in Dec. and I am just now at 40 lbs.

I weigh myself every day. Some people say that's a bad thing to do. I think it's good for me though. If I am up a lb it makes me try harder the next day.

What is going on with this site. I keep getting messages that I have

to wait 20 seconds to post. Then it does a double post. weird.

It's good to know I'm not the only one double posting.

New NSV tonight. I went to a wedding and the aunt and grandmother of the bride both said I looked wonderful. They actually said skinny to me, not that I am. They always ask about how I feel and if I'm having problems. I get asked that alot. Does anyone else?

Good luck! You'll do fine. I'll never regret doing this. Can't wait to get my fill and see what happens. I'm not unhappy with my loss so far. I know that this is a "forever" thing. I will keep in touch with this thread. Helps to know you're all 50+ yrs. old, too.... :biggrin1:

Nobody asks me how I am feeling because I chose not to tell very many people. If anyone asks me how I am losing weight, I tell them I have changed my eating habits. I don't want people asking me all the time how much I have lost, etc. It's bad enough I have my daughter who I call the food police. If I eat one tiny bite of something I am not supposed to, she gets mad.

She had the RNY, so a lot of foods that I wish made me sick, do make her really sick.

Denise822- I didn't tell anyone I was doing this. Only my husband knew at the beginning. My mom knows now. I felt the same way, as you do. Didn't want people asking me questions about it all of the time OR "watching" me. I'll take my time and just tell people that I've changed my eating habits, too. Sometimes, I feel like I cheated, by having the operation. But, I didn't want to go through the rest of my life with the extra weight.

I'm with you all. I didn't tell many people either. But I sure don't look at it as cheating in any way. I couldn't do it on my own and needed some help and I had the guts to go and get it. So much better than the alternative of just growing fatter and sicker by the year.

Best wishes to you tomorrow Cblancha!. I think you may be surprised at how quickly you recover. We'll be thinking of you. Let us know how you're doing as soon as you feel like sitting at the computer. (Most people feel like it right away.:))

Good luck Cblancha! Welcome to lapband world!

I am glad I didn't tell anyone, as slow as it's going for me.

It's only the people that I haven't seen in a long time that

notice that I have lost any weight.

I am 59 years old. Was banded July 24, 2007 I have lost 100 pounds. I eat like the others have said. I work out with a trainer 2 times a week and up until recently did 30 minutes on the bike 3 times a week. I have hit a hard time right now. I say that you can loss weight as slow as you want. That's the great thing about the band. consistency is the key! Good luck!

I suppose many of us think we are "cheating" by being banded. I know I did, but now I know that it is a tool I needed to become healthy. It is no different to me than taking insulin as a diabetic or meds for High Blood Pressure. I do not tell those who are not close to me because it's not necessary. People continue to look for a quick fix. I tell people, I eat healthy, and exercise. There are no quick fixes! Thank God for this little band it has literally saved my life!!!

You are an inspiration, leedorr. Congratulations on your great success.

I have to keep telling myself that, although I'm losing very slowly, I'm still losing. You are right--there are no quick fixes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
