TigerLily 3 Posted September 29, 2011 I have a question for those experienced sleevers. Can certain foods give you the slimes? This morning was my first case of the slimes. I had 1/2 a scrambled egg w/cheese and a 1/2 piece of TJ's turkey bacon. That was it. TMI (sorry) I am gagging and spitting up all over the place. I have never had this before. I have eaten more quantity that this and it didn't happen. For example, on Sunday I ate 1/3 of a small Wendy's chili and all was good. Soup and food of the like seem to go down much better for me. I feel like I have a lump in my throat, too. It is slowly going away. I took a good long time to eat as well. I was cooking for the kids and doing laundry between bites. The lump feeling (not the slimes) happened with some roasted chicken as well. Maybe I just need to eat soup for the rest of my life?
Rootman 1,101 Posted September 29, 2011 I think this is temporary, I had a lot of mucus too for a while and as I healed and ate a bit more it seems to have dissipated.
FishingNurse 1,211 Posted September 29, 2011 I have only gotten the slimes 4 times, and everytime it was a small amount of dense protein-- beef Jerky, roast beef, turley breast and turkey pepperoni. I did not chew well enough. Nothing else even phases me!
grannyk 58 Posted September 29, 2011 Yes, Tigerlily, I am a victim of the "slimes" at times. Sometimes it happens even with foods that have gone down easily before. It is mostly with dense Proteins like roast, pulled pork, etc. Or it can be with things I usually tolerate easily but don't pay attention when I am eating. I am 5 months out and sometimes I still forget that I can't eat quickly anymore. Once I feel the scenario starting, usually there is no way out but to throw up what is stuck. Not pleasant at all. Oh well, it is my own fault when it happens and I wouldn't trade my sleeve for anything. Kathe

I am STILL having a difficult time slowing down, especially when I eat with others. I feel anti social because I avoid eating socially at all costs because I feel as if I might puke in front of them and that would be mortifying....
Becca 108 Posted September 29, 2011 I get the "slimes" from time to time. Hamburger meat and rice seem to be two triggers for me. It seems like the food just gets stuck and has to come back up. Luckily, it doesn't happen all that often with the sleeve.
Escape_Pod 358 Posted September 29, 2011 I know I should just count my blessings and move on, but I feel a little weird about the fact that I've never experienced the slimes, and I've never thrown up. I hear so many people say their sleeve teaches them not to overeat, because if they have one bite too many it comes back up again. I feel like my sleeve isn't really giving me much feedback at all, and I'm 3 months out! I've certainly had days where I felt like I probably ate a bit more of something than I should have, just kind of a full / restriction feeling. Some foods feel a little heavier in my pouch, but that's about it. I guess I worry that I'm not learning to be as disciplined as I should because I've never had a bad reaction to anything. At my support group this week, someone said it's a good idea to make sure you always have plastic bags in your car ,in case you need to throw up, because it WILL happen. I'm thinking -- really? This is SO not my experience! Am I the only one??
SuperMom 33 Posted October 1, 2011 Alot of people have trouble with scrambled eggs (me too) poached goes down fine....the scrambled just is harder to digest....not sure why? And dense white chicken breast I have to put alot of ketchup or Salad Dressing on for it to go down ( I think it is too dry)
MegInNOLA 531 Posted October 1, 2011 I can't do scrambled eggs, either--and I've been too chicken to try eggs any other way. I definitely get "the slimes" when I eat something my sleeve doesn't like--and I also got them a few months ago when I was still learning how much I was able to eat. I do eat a lot of Soup still--it just goes down comfortably, and I can kind of gauge how much I'm eating by both how I feel and by volume.

I am worried about the vomiting. My question is: Does it happen so suddenly that you can't make it to the bathroom or do you get a sign or two? I would hate to be out with the family and ruin dinner. This is SO not my experience! Am I the only one?? No, you aren't the only one. I have never thrown up or even had the slimes. In fact, I am still not exactly sure what "the slimes" are like. I have felt a restriction a couple of times and I know for sure that I am not going to get one more bite in. However, that restriction is a guideline for me and I am glad to have it there. I can't say enough good things about my sleeve.
virtygirl 11 Posted October 2, 2011 Perhaps your scrambled egg was too dry...my NUT suggested adding just tad bit of milk to make eggs fluffier and moister to make them go down easier. Turkey bacon gives me the slimed, I think I'm not chewing up well enough or eating too fast.

I can't say enough good things about my sleeve. I've also never thrown up or gotten the slimies, only felt too full a few times, nothing painful. Swallowed Water too fast once and it hurt for a minute, that's about all I can complain of. The sleeve has been a walk in the park for me thus far (touch wood)! Denise's New Life 43 Posted October 2, 2011 Good Morning!! you might want to try egg beaters ( they are not as rich as real eggs) the slimes can still happen to me after almost 6 months ,not as often though, this depends on if I eat too fast or if I am upset when I eat or you mentioned taking bites while you were doing other things. I have learned that I need to just sit and eat and then sit for about 10 minutes afterwards to let my food settle before I start to move too much. things get better and you learn what is best as time goes on. Khy 16 Posted October 2, 2011 I am 2 months out and I have never thrown up. I did get the slimes once early out when I tried to eat too much and too fast. Yes I feel the restriction. I know when I am full. I am working on slowing dow the eating. I so get a heavyness in the stomach... doesn't really hurt but is not pleasant either. I think this is because I eat too fast. I am working on slowing it down. Khy
