8 months post surgery

Recommended Posts

I am a few days past my 8 month surgiversary, and I am proud to say I have met the Dr.'s Goal!!! I don't understand though why the Dr. has a goal that keeps my BMI above 25. So, now I am on to my personal goal, which is to get below the 25 BMI mark, so I will be considered in a Normal weight category for the first time since high school. I think I have another 8 to 10 pounds to go to get to a 24.9 BMI. Has anyone else had the Dr. set a goal which would keep you still at an "Overweight BMI"?

Hey,

Yeah, my surgeon's goal was to lose 6 stone, which is 84lb and keeps me above the normal BMI range. He said he doesn't worry too much about the BMI range as it is 'one size fits all' and therefore doesn't take into account the individual. I have to admit I agree with him to a certain degree.... but then there is that side of me that wants to be 'normal'! Like you I have two goals, surgeon's goal and my personal one and again, like you, the personal goal is to reach 24.? on the BMI scale!

Congrats on meeting Dr Goal in such a short space of time... and good luck with the last hurdle. I reckon you'll be there in no time at all!!

My surgeon gave me a "realistic" weight with the sleeve of 220#, and that I might be able to diet and exercise a bit more off. I want to get to at least 195#, and ideally 180#, for a BMI of 25. If I can maintain most of my current muscle mass through exercise, I don't think 180 is realistic. But we shall see!

My doctor never gave me a verbal goal weight...at my appointment I just noticed that 150 was written on my paper work, and I found out that would be my normal BMI weight, so I made that my personal goal :)

My doctor also wants me to stay in the overweight category. I asked him about this because I really want to hit the normal range. He said they don't encourage weightloss patients to have a 'normal' bmi because many people go to extremes to hit that & they start losing muscle & not fat... the loss of muscle slows the metabolism & causes them to start regaining. He also said that many people who have had issues with food in the past become extreme in the other direction and can become anorexic. So he tries to give us a 'realistic' weight to reach. I am about 10 pounds from his goal weight for me. Like you, I have the weight that I would ideally like to get to... if it can be done healthily. I told him the last time I saw him that even if I don't lose another pound, I can be content at the weight I'm at right now... though I might still need plastic surgery to get rid of all the lose skin, which makes me feel a lot bigger than I really am. Good luck!

Krista

I was never given a goal. However, I personally set my goal at a weight to where my bmi would be normal. I felt that was the best way to start. Congratulations on meeting his goal. That's fantastic! I'm sure if you are wanting to reach your goal you will do great.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
