So I been reading and a surgeon told me today that won't perform a VSG on me because I have GERD and the VSG could make the GERD even worse. He is trying to push on me the RYN. For those you have or had GERD,how is it now after the surgery? Is it better? worst? and How long ago you had surgery? Thanks!

I had my surgery 6 weeks ago and my doctor put me on a chewable PPI for the first 6 months and he said I could go back to my omeprazole after that. So far I haven't had any problems!!

Thank you so much for your input :)

I am 4 weeks out and have GERD. My doctor just kept me on my omeprazole. For the first three weeks, I was instructed to open the pills and swallow the little white balls. I am now taking the capsules. My GERD has been under control throughout the process. I had one minor issue when the doctor tried to change the dose from two pills/day to one, but, once he moved me back to two, it was fine and I am fine. Hope this helps.

My surgeon said it depended on the cause of the GERD, and whether I had Barrett's Esophagus (scarring). When I had an upper endoscopy, we found a fairly large hiatal hernia and no Barretts, so he felt it was ok to proceed with the sleeve because the hiatal hernia was likely causing the GERD and could be repaired when he did the sleeve surgery.

RNY patients do tend to have less issues with GERD than sleeve patients, and particularly if you're already seeing Barretts, it's nothing to mess around with. It can lead to esophageal cancer, which is usually discovered too late for effective treatment.

I had GERD for 8 years prior to surgery. My dr. explained that my reflux issues could become much more severe after surgery. He was a little cautious and made me take an UPPER GI, UPPER ENDOSCOPY and go off my PPI for a month to see how I felt prior to surgery.

I must say that since surgery, as long as I don't forget to take my meds, I feel fine! NO problems at all. I actually think it might be a little better than before.

Kelly :)

I am going thru the same thing. I have gerd also, next week I have to have esophagram, ugi, gastric emptying solids, to see how bad my reflux is. I take Omperzole 40 mg a day. So I am hoping these come back ok, I too do not really want to go RYN if I can help it. Has your dr done any testing on you yet. I work for the surgeon that is doing mine, so I am glad he is doing these tests first.

This is my last remaining issue to get comfortable with before deciding to be sleeved. I never had reflux until I got the gastric band in 2001. I just got that removed and want to see what happens from here. i don't have Barrets, but here is what terrifies me.... I get the sleeve procedure and get really bad GERD which forces me to revise to RNY which i DON'T want. I am afraid that once I decide to get the sleeve that it will set off a cascade of events - and lead to an end result I don't want. I need to come to peace with this risk before proceeding as there are some studies that show that reflux problems increase after the 3 year mark post sleeve surgery.

Thats how I feel too. Thats why I am having these tests done to make sure this will not make it worse.

I have GERD, a Hiatal Hernia and early Barrett's esophagitis and I'm having the VSG with a Hiatal hernia repair. The dr told me that I have to have an EGD every year for 5 years and if they all come back normal I'll get to change to every other year. Getting the weight off and getting the hernia repaired will help with the GERD the most for me. I watched when the did my esophogram and I refluxed up to my collar bone area when they laid me down!! I will do anything to help make this better!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
