Dr Aceves patient- 1st few weeks ?

Recommended Posts

I've decided on Dr. Aceves and currently narrowing down the date and suddenly have become very nervous about the first few weeks after surgery. Would be great to fear from any and all Aceves patients what were your first few weeks like? I'd like to hear the good, the bad and the ugly  Just trying to prepare myself.

THANKS!

Hi there - I'm at day 4 post op w/Dr. Aceves. Overall, the pre-op/hospital experience was quite comfortable. The entire staff was kind and quick to respond to any need that came up. Now that I'm home, my only concern is with the timeframe of the post-op diet Dr. Aceves requires. This is only because I'm finding it very difficult to get the 70 gr. clear Liquid Protein in, and we're supposed to be at that stage for 10 days. I have no worries about things once I'm into the full liquids stage, but I'm worried that I'll only be able to get maybe 40-45 gr. clear liquid Protein in during this first stage, and what that might mean for my recovery. I'm posting here and there trying to get input, but I haven't resolved the issue yet. I will post more as time goes on, but I've been very happy with my decision to go to Dr. Aceves and would recommend him without hesitation to anyone.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
