How do you get your caffeine fix?

Recommended Posts

I stay away from caffeine mainly because I am diabetic and I've read that it is a huge contributor to spiking blood sugar levels. And I have experienced this...drinking too much regular coffee makes me very hungry. I have found that Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks make great Decaf coffees.

I'm on the road a lot for my job, and Starbucks has a Cafe Misto that I love. I do Decaf and it's really nice to have the hot drink and still get the taste and feel of drinking coffee. My nut basically said no more caffeine ever, but I've had many days where I've done 1/2 caff and I'm fine. I'm 3 months out :)

I was a pretty avid coffee drinker before surgery, but I guess the Dr. sunk it into my head that It might dehydrate me. I haven't had a single cup since I got out of surgery and for some reason I'm not craving it. In fact, when i go into the breakroom at work, the smell of coffee is actually a little overwhelming. But just like all the other posts say, I don't think there's one answer on that. If it doesn't bother you, go for it. But, with anything, I'd use moderation.

I also stayed away from any type of coffee during the first 4 weeks of healing. And then when I did go back I went for Decaf. I know the link between ulcers and caffeine are very weak at best, but I don't want to take chances with my new tummy...I really don't want an ulcer in 10, 20, 30 years. I still do have caffeine occassionally but I usually drink a cup of decaf a day.

I followed my program guidelines. I was allowed Decaf immediately, but I didn't have any for a couple of weeks probably. My tummy was really picky at first, and I was afraid it wouldn't sit well. I drank Starbucks or Peets decaf for the first three months, and now I am back to caffiene. Yeah! I generally get mine in by having a Soy Milk Latte in the morning. Gets in 8 oz. of fluids and 8 grams of Protein with my caffeine fix.

I weaned myself off caffeine months before my surgery. I did it slowly (mixing regular coffee w/ decaf) so as to avoid the horrible caffeine withdrawal headaches. Now (1 month post-op), coffee has become one of the many things I used to like but don't like since surgery. I still make a single cup of Decaf most mornings, but throw most of it out because I just don't enjoy it anymore. When I run out, I don't plan to buy another can of coffee. I will keep a small can of regular around though, for those mornings (like today) when I wake up with a Migraine.< /p>

Just found out today from my GI that green tea was a bad idea as a caffeine alternative. So I am quitting both coffee and tea for good. :0/

I started drinking coffee and tea at about 6 weeks out. I was not told to eliminate anything except carbonated drinks...thank God!! Luckily my dietitian and the nurse (she'd have sleeve surgery) said that they wouldn't ask us to do something they did not abide by! I love my Star Bucks!!

Hate to admit but I'm addicted to caffeine and wonder after VGS how do people get their caffeine fix or is that another thing you just have to give up forever?:(

I just got in an order yesterday (I order my coffee off the internet, kcups) of my favorite type that was available in dcaf (green mountain Vermont Country Blend) I am getting ready to pop one in the machine right now...so looking forward to it, hope the Decaf is as good as the regular.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
