Recommended Posts

Hate to admit but I'm addicted to caffeine and wonder after VGS how do people get their caffeine fix or is that another thing you just have to give up forever?:(

Wow, really I thought it was a goner for sure, lol. I usually have at least 1 diet soda a day and 1 coffee in the morning, and I've been known to do the "5 hr energy shot' too. I've read carbonated sodas feel terrible and can stretch yr sleeve and many can't do coffee, so I figured I was going to need a 12 step program for the my caffeine.

The doctors, nuts and programs are all OVER the place on this one -- some saying you should never drink it ever again, some saying you should wait a while, and some allowing it freely.

I drink iced coffee (only way I like it) but the Creamer (nondairy) will stall me every time. I switched to the real creamer and now I am losing AND enjoying my daily cup of coffee. I drink iced tea as well but stick to Decaf because I can't handle too much caffeine (my whole life not from surgery)

I drink coffee. I drank decaff the first month and then went back to regular and I have had no problems. I don't drink soda because it makes me burp to the point of annoyance and I don't really like the taste anymore.

I drank Decaf for 2 days when I came home from the hospital and then decided it was such a waste to pour out the coffee left in the coffee pot after Hubby went to work so I tried a cup of the caffeinated and didn't seem to have any issue with it. I'm not a big coffee drinker but I do enjoy one morning cup. I'm 16 days post op.

I drink iced coffee twice a day, every day. And--brace yourself--I put a little chocolate Syrup in there, too. I know, I'm bad. That's the only sugar I allow myself. The caffeine keeps my brain sharp and the milk gives me some extra Protein, which I need, since my sleeve is so darned picky. I started back up with coffee practically the day I came home from surgery, but my doc didn't have a rule against it (happily). In my "new normal," the iced coffee is a familiar friend that my sleeve tolerates well and my brain appreciates. In fact, I'm in the middle of my "afternoon" iced coffee right now--since being sleeved, a small (16-ounce) iced coffee lasts several hours.

I had to quite the habit and been cafine free for 9 months now. I don't miss it. According to my surgeon, cafine is a gastric irritant and at least during the phase where you are healing up he would prefer you not have it to minimize risk.

I drink several double shot cappuccinos daily. coffee was on my clear liquid list. :-) who am I to argue with my DR. ?

I do not count it toward my daily liquid. Heck, I roast my on coffee Beans, so one might say I love coffee! Well good coffee anyway.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
