What did I do to myself!!!!!!!?????

I thought everything had to be clear the first week? I am three days out and miserable as well. I can't stomach any of the Protein I have so it's just been Water, ice pops, and crystal light. I am starving I guess from lack of protein, but I was not prepared for this as well. I read soo many people on here saying it was hard but noone said it was this bad. I am having pain in my stomach everytime I drink n I think I am having stomach spasms. Also I am having pain only on my right upper abdomen but it's not close to where any incisions are. I mean it hurts especially when I move but it's not terrible but is this normal?

suez1105-I'm on full liquids which means Soups are ok so long as they are thinned out and lump free. I'm having spasms too, so I literally have to calm myself down because the anxiousness I'm feeling certainly doesn't help the grumbellies. we'll get threw this and then when someone makes the comment ( when we r down 2 r goal wt) that we took the easy way out - we can punch their lights out! LOL!

I think it depends on your surgeon whether you are all clears or full liquids. I am on full liquids and am three days out as well. I tried a Protein Drink for the first time tonight. It went fine but i can definitely feel it sitting heavier than the Water. I had the stomach spasms each time I drank as well, until this morning when I put the straw in my mouth and took teeny tiny sips... but I drank every few seconds. It helped enormously. My stomach stopped spasing and I am getting my liquids in. Not quite as much as I had hoped at this point, but still pretty good. I've got 40 oz in and am working on the last 20, so hopefully by the time I am asleep I can get that in. The other thing, and my one wonderful nurse told me this, often cold things make the stomach spasm. They had given me ice water and I was having a hard time with it, when I let it "warm up" it went much better. So the ice pops might be making it worse for you. Try sipping on some warm broth or warm water with a bouillon cube in it. I really enjoyed that while I was in the hospital. It was the easiest to get down.

Good luck, and don't forget you aren't alone!

@emily - good point about warm fluids. I do find that I can get tea, broth, hot chocolate down much better than just plain Water. Today I had water with lemon and a little honey and it helped out a lot. We'll get thru this folks, and when we do- LOOK OUT!

I had my surgery Tuesday and once I got home was told I could do full liquids. I have been concentrating on just having 1%milk and Protein mixed in. Even did Peanut Butter in the shake to get that extra Protein in. I have gotten all the protein in for the day but am struggling to get my 64 oz of Water. I am going back and forth between regular Water and Propel (bleh). I know we can count the shake liquid as our liquid but I am only at 32 oz right now, not sure I can get more in....

I am very bloated with gas, rumbling tummy and feel like I just left a huge buffet but I am optimistic that this too will pass. I can have cream Soups and pudding, etc... but right now I am sticking to the shakes. This was my first full day at home and I don't want to try too many things yet.

My surgeon told me to eat whatever I wanted (full liquid/creamy wise) because I would be taking in so little it didn't matter, she didn't give me a carb restriction. I finally got a calorie goal out of her and she said somewhere around 900 calories!! I thought that was almost double what I should be taking in but she said it was ok.

I am lucky and can get the shakes down relatively easy, takes around 30-45min but I still like them. I have plenty of samples and Torani flavors to mix things up. I also saved the smoothie recipes I found on here and on http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/ so I think I will be ok (except for that darn water thing). I have a determination!! We will get thru this everyone!! This site is great for that!

Boy, you can tell I am on the meds, side effect being obnoxious ramblings!! Forgive me

My favorite thing to make on full liquids was:

Base soup=

chicken broth

Milk

chicken breast

Fully soft roasted veggies

Whipped up in the blender and strained

Then a 1/2 scoop powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken Soup

I'd add chili,Butter chicken sauce, etc if I wanted to change it up. Awsome amounts of protein!!! Omit the milk if low carbing.

I still drink this in the morning if I'm on the run. You'll also start to feel sooooo much better when you start getting some nutrients in you. For those of you just on Water, try getting SOMETHING that has Protein in it. You'll feel so much better so quickly. Water hurt me. Chicken broth and warm milk felt better going down.

Oooh the first week. I had a pain on my right side and it was swollen there. It hurt when I moved around much, like getting in and out of bed. I developed diarrhea and found out I was lactose intolerant. My gut rumbled like there was a mac truck in there. I was tired big time. I gained 16 lbs. from fluids during my overnight hospital stay.

I'm just telling you guys this so you know you are not alone. Now, at 4 months plus a few days, I am in size 10s and 12s pants, medium tops (down from 18-20 pants and 2x -3x tops). I've lost 53 lbs. post surgery and have just 34 lbs. to go to my goal, 135, which will put me at 21.8 BMI.

Things that helped me the first week:

  • Drinking from a one ounce medicine cup. Small sips, one medicine cup every 15 minutes. I used a 1 cup measuring cup as a pitcher so I didn't have to hop up and down every 15 minutes to refill my medicine cup. I drank in tiny sips, taking the 15 minutes to finish the ounce. Keeping this up all day got me to 64 oz. by the end of the day.
  • unjury chicken Protein powder: I tolerated this better than anything else.
  • I walked around the house every hour or two and took one to two longer walks every day.
  • I used pillows to make my bed like the hospital bed. I used one big one under my knees and three behind my head.
  • I mostly wore a loose nightgown and no undies.
  • I lotioned my poor stretched skin. It took about 8 days to release the fluids the IV pumped in me.
  • Taking my pain meds. I know a lot of people didn't need them, but I did. They kept me comfortable and I slept well at night.

I had hoped I would be one of those people who felt great after day two and was rarin' to go by the end of the first week, but I wasn't. Everyone's recovery is different. But we all do recover!

Best wishes to all of you recent VSGers and welcome to the losers' bench!

Lynda

Hi PenguinLover,

I buy mine online. I couldn't find it at any stores locally. I didn't order it till post-op because I had some other stuff I had bought and tolerated well pre-surgery (I tolerated it well after a couple of weeks post-op too, but not at first!). It came pretty quick, thank goodness!

I was sleeved Monday too and still feel pretty awful. Swollen and bloated but unable to pass gas. Can't get comfy either. I just take a deep breath remember this is only temporary. Though I did cry like a baby Monday from the pain.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
