Has anyone tried Meridia to help lose weight prior to lap banding?

Recommended Posts

I am trying so hard to lose the 10 lbs. I am required to lose prior to surgery. I am considering ordering Meridia online. Since I have started being on insulin for my diabetes, my appetite has been out of control! I feel instense hunger all the time. I am eating weight watchers meals, but then I get the hungry horrors and irritable 3 hours later. I am also working out at the gym 3 days a week. I try eating yogurt in between meals, and also carrots. I drink lots and lots of Water in hopes of feeling full - it is not working! Help!! Thanks LBT, for allowing me to vent my frustrations.

Hi Rachel ( I like that name I have a daugher Rachel)

I have tried meridia....not worth going on, lots of money and you could do just as well on slim fast. Carrots...another bad idea...full of sugar, harder to burn. Weight Watcher meals...are you talking prepackaged? They are full of sodium...even the WW ladies at weigh in don't condone them. Actually...South Beach Diet works very well and its not all fatty like the other diets out there. (ex. Atkins) Don't get me wrong, Atkins worked very well for me, but the fatty food part was freaking me out so I stopped.

When is your surgery date?

No surgery date yet - just in the process of meeting with program coordinator, P.T., nutritionist and psychologist next week. Awaiting approval by my insurance company (mine and my husband's)

On average if you take Meridia for 12 months along with a reduced calorie diet, you lose approx. 10-15# in a year. You tend to lose about 1# per dosage (in mg) over a year. Oddly enough, it's least effective in patients with a BMI of 50 or over, as they tend to lose much less. One landmark Vanderbilt University study proved:

In one 12 month study, patients who took 10 mg of Meridia daily lost an average of 10 pounds, while those taking 15 mg daily lost an average of 14 pounds

On average it costs about $3 per pill, retail. A 30-day monthly supply runs approx $90-$100 at full cost (some insurance plans covers it, but most do not).:phanvan

So you have to decide if the prescription is worth it for you. Sure, who wouldn't like to lose an extra 10# or more a year, but at a yearly cost of over $1000 (retail price)?

But, hey for some of us, every bit helps!

Good Luck.

It all varies. My husband take meridia and in 4 mos on it he has lost 23 pounds.

Of course he is also eating more healthy and he started to exercise a bit so that has an influence. but he says the meridia has really helped him. And he does feel "fuller" and eats less.

I also tried Meridia-twice! It was useless for me, and it cost me $130 for a 30 day supply. My doctor told me there is a small percentage of us who are not effected at all by this drug.

The only thing Meridia did for me was give me wicked stomach pain and gas that could peal wallpaper off your walls. Icky stuff IMHO.

Sorry

I was on Meridia..I hated it! I lost NOTHING but my sex drive and erection! I had headaches all the time and felt horible.

I know its hard but I too had to lose weight prior to my surgery due to a fatty liver. I slim fasted it and hated it but in the end it was so worth it!

I tried Meridia several years ago. It did nothing for me either. I kept waiting for it to kick in and it never did.

In a few of the posts I have read it indicates that you are required to eat a lower calorie menu while on meridia and doing this you will lose approx 10 lbs / year.

Lowering your calorie consumption alone will promote weight loss......I don't see the need for the pill unless its an appetite suppressant.....I have not heard of a suppressant that works yet....not long term anyhow.

I would keep your money in your pocket.

Tried it 3 years ago. Didn't lose a damn thing.

Gave me the shakes, and made me irritable...

Wait... I'm still irritable. I guess that side effect was permanent.

Meridia worked short term for me and I lost a little bit of weight....can't remember exactly. Your body does adjust to it so it's not for long term use. Also, I would encourage you to NOT purchase it online unless you are being monitored by a doc. It has been known to raise BP and I had to make regular visits to my doc. Luckily, it didn't affect mine and my BP actually went down with the weight loss. Please be careful and consider ALL your options. I wish you the very best.

Hi Rachel, you're on the right track by eating multiple times per day but I'd switch from yogurt and carrots to something with more Protein. Protein lasts longer and makes you feel fuller. Plus, when you're working out like you are then protein becomes even more important. You might try that before considering medication?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
