Protein Shakes Make me Nauseous

Recommended Posts

I'm 9 days post-op, and until yesterday, I actually enjoyed the Protein Shakes. Now I get nauseous every time I have one. I've seen others say they couldn't stomach them, but what did you do instead? I can't think of anything to give me as much Protein. I've been drinking Unjury with skim milk which gave me 30 per shake. Help!

Truthfully I just didn't get much of any Protein for probably the first 7 weeks with the issues I had, I would say the only source of protein I did get was from string cheese. Once I was able to eat I just had sure to focus on protein first and everything after. My levels have been fine at each check up.

Greek yogurt is good for Protein. You can flavor it up with sugar-free syrups, a little fruit etc. Do you like Soup? I depended on strained Soups with unflavored Protein Powder added in. Unjury also has a good chicken soup flavored protein. I'm almost 3 months and just now starting to get grossed out my the Protein Shakes a little. I hate that because I really liked them in the beginning.

Yeah, they did for me too, and on the odd occasion I drink one at 9+ months out I still get a tad queasy after slugging one down. Just try another brand till you get one you can tolerate. I drink Boost! by Nestle because they are smaller than many of the canned varieties and the taste isn't too gawd awful bad. The other alternatives a few of which which have already been brought up is Greek yogurt ( sweeten / flavor with a sugar free drink mix like Crystal Light ) or Protein Shots - which are really nasty tasting but only 3ozs or less. Just keep trying till you find what works for you. After a few months, seems like at 6 months out for most, you can pretty much drop the shots / drinks and just eat real food.< /span>

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
