New to WLS (Looking like Sleeve is best option)

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I just joined this forum today. I am in the process of researching WLS. I've been to two different medical offices that offer the proedure, including a seminar where the facility offers Lap Band, Gastric Bypass, and Vertical Gastric Sleeve. From the research I have done on my own, I think the Sleeve is the least risky of all the procedures. However, the woman who gave the seminar was trying to lead me away from the sleeve because "it can't be reversed" and that the time I would have to be on a pure liquid diet would be alot longer than with a gastric bypass.

I am really nervous about having surgery, but 3 doctors have told me that I need to have it. I am 5'7 and weigh 289bls which is the heaviest I've ever been in my life. The smallest I've ever been was a size 14. (I currently wear a size 22-24) I have lost weight in the past, only to gain it back three-fold.

Is there any advice you can give to an emotional eater with joint problems?

Hello, and welcome! I known the things going through your head and I know how hard it is. I was just sleeved on the 30th of August and couldn't be happier. I was initially leaning towards the band but with frequent trips for fills and the higher complication rate i decided against it. I was going to do the bypass but I was turned off by the malabsorption. I talked toba friend who had it done and was still having nausea and vomitting and a lot of foods she couldn't tolerate. When I spoke with people who had te sleeve, none of them had issues. This isn't to say it doesn't come with risks, but long term it seems the best for me. Also, i know it's permanent. I have been fat all of my life and if I have a surgery to help me I want it to be LIFE LONG. I have also read that NSAIDs are okay in short spurts with the sleeve...which can be useful for joint issues. I don't know If this helped but good luck!

This was one of the reasons i'm leaning towards a sleeve. I don't want any malabsorbtive problems down the road. Thanks for replying. I believe there has been a couple of times in my life where my legs didn't rub together.

Have you had any problems eating foods that you want?

I haven't at all. I am still progressing my diet as my doctor orders. They have a strict method of gettimg back to all foods. So far, no nausea or vomitting. I eat cottage cheese, Soup, eggs, pudding, yogurt, oatmeal, etc. Much better than clear liquids! I add things back in every week. Jill :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
