Does anyone drink Diet Coke after surgery? Diet Coke has always been my go-to drink. When I was dieting before, knowing I could have a Diet Coke was a real treat for me. I know I just need to get out of that mindset and am working on it. I can't seem to find another drink that I like as much. I enjoy Water but need something else. The sports drinks and flavored waters just don't do it.

I'm only one week post-op and am completely fine with not having it for a given period (3-6 months?), but the idea of never having another one is daunting. Thoughts?

I was a HUGE diet coke fanatic before surgery. I had my 6 week post op doctor visit on Friday and specifically asked about diet coke and carbonation and was told under no uncertain terms that I am to not consume carbonation that it can stretch out my sleeve. I know I have read differently on this site, that some folks drink it with no problem and with the blessings of their doctor, but that is what MY doctor has said and that is what I will follow. I would suggest checking with your doctor and seeing what he/she has to say. And BTW ice cold fruit punch crystal light has been my saving grace!

I have also heard people say that they drink diet soda, but my surgeon told me specifically not to consume any kind of soda. She said that even diet sodas mess with the blood sugars and make you hungry and that the carbonation is not good for your sleeve. A lot of sleevers do indulge, but I have written all soda off for good.

My surgeon said no soda for 6 weeks. There's sooooooo many conflicting stories from pre op to post op. I used to love the waters from Walmart ... I think they're carbonated though. I too need something with a "kick" just Water or juice don't always hit the spot.

My surgeon recommends not drinking it but he said it will not harm you, it may slow weight loss. I have had sips of diet coke a few times and its definately a treat!

My surgeon said no carbonation, ever again. I really miss the Diet Coke, but hopefully I'll feel better in the long run if I'm not drinking 6-8 cans a day like I was pre-surgery.

It is so interesting to me how different the surgeons' advice can be.

At Aldi's food store try the fit and trim Active flavored Water in lemonaide flavor. It has so much lemonaide flavor that I add Water to tone it down a bit, but if you like lemonaide this is a great drink to get your water in without sacrificing taste. They have other flavors, but I just really like the lemonaide.

I can have carbonation (eg, soda, fizzy Water, sparkling wines) in moderation, but I do limit it. I have a coke light every now and then for a treat when I've been out walking in the hot sun all day sometimes. I have to drink it real slowly and it doesn't sit well, but it does really hit the spot every now and then.

Here's my standard reply:

Ehhhh I've been drinking soda for well over 18 months with zero change to my sleeve capacity. I drink caffeine free sodas most of the time, usually gingerale or Fanta soda. Sometimes I drink diet sometimes I don't. Early out it causes discomfort because of the residual swelling, but I can drink soda just like I can with Water. Soda does leach the Calcium from our bones so make sure you're taking your calcium citrate.

Some report the sweet cravings with soda, but I don't get them. liquids in, liquids out, just like with Water, tea, coffee, whatever other liquids we drink. It's not like soda sits in there brewing for hours on end blowing out our sleeves. This theory is the most absurd thing I've ever heard and my surgeon just kind of laughed that people really believe that soda sits in there brewing up, blowing up the sleeve. Liquids go in, hit the pylorus, empty out. I sometimes burp, sometimes I don't, but believe it or not, water makes me burp too ;)

I also know tons of RNY patients that drink soda without issue. But, I'm not advocating going off your surgeon's plan, but I'm not a believer that soda has all this phenomenal power over our sleeves.

Started drinking it about once a week about a month ago. It's not the sweet I like but the bite. If it's too sweet, I do not want it. As a frame of reference, I now buy a small at McD's (it's when I take the little ones there to play on Saturday), it's caffine free and I drink about 2/3's of the drink. I sip. Now here's what I've found interesting. On those days, I have to remind myself to eat the next time. I eat at noon. I pick the kids up at 1 so we are at McD's around 1:20. We leave there at 3:00 and usually around 5 I suddenly remember I've missed a meal. It's actually crossed my mind that I should have it every day!

I think most of us a few months out know how fast liquid goes through us. I'd love to understand how a teaspoon sip of diet coke could stretch my sleeve. Honestly, I think eating too fast is far more of a risk fo that issue if there is a risk at all. Just my opinion based on my experience.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
