Fast tracking to a new life!

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I am sitting here in shocked surprise that I have a surgery date on Sept 27th. My initial consultation with my surgeon was on August 26th and I had my appointments with both the NUT and the Psychologist within 10 days. Everyone kept pointing out that I was being "fast tracked" but I had no idea it would be 30 days from start to finish! Talk about whirlwind LOL!

It's funny, I looked into WLS two years ago and decided that having Gastric Bypass was just not for me. I could not get past the malabsorption, long list of potential complications and giving up the NSAIDS that save my sanity in dealing with the arthritis in my lower back. Since then my co-morbidities have multiplied to include diabetes, and I have put on an additional 35 pounds; walking is no longer just a normal thing to do. I have more aches and pains than my 81 year old mother and I am only 49! I was surfing the net one day and found this forum, decided to ask for another referral from my primary for a bariatric consult...that was the end of July. Dr. Ali (UC Davis Center of Excellence) agreed that a bypass was out of the question because of the NSAID use and also having IBS; he said VSG was just what the doctor ordered LOL. I had the group meeting the second week of August and everything has fallen into place easily, almost too easily. I keep telling myself that it is because it was meant to be this time, that right now was my time to take charge and make the decision that will not only save my life but give me the quality of life I so desperately want. I don't care about being a size 7 again, I just want to get down on the floor with my grandson and not have to crawl over to a piece of furniture to pull my 260 lbs off the dang floor!

There are so many brave souls here...thanks for sharing, you are making me braver for all the positive support that you give each other.

Smiles!

Welcome, Dolly. You won't be sorry. The sleeve is the best thing that ever happened to me and my daughter. Don't let yourself get nervous or anxious...no buyer's remorse. This is a positively life changing experience, with the emphasis on "positive"!!!! Kathe

I was in the same boat! I had researched it for about a year on and off. I even attended a seminar once but I didnt like the staff (DUMB) so I put it off again. We got new insurance and I was checking to see if they covered it and found a seminar the next day (saturday) and signed up. At the siminar, my husband and I decided that I should go for it. I made an appt for Monday and scheduled surgery for the following MONDAY! My surgeon said I was the fastest seminar to surgery they ever had! I already saw a therapist and had a 20 year track record with weight watchers and my insurance wouldnt cover it because it was new and my bmi was 40 and not 50. We decided to self pay and in a week it was done! I felt like I was in a whirlwind. I was scared but happy it was happening so fast. I only had one week of preop diet but I lost 9 pounds with that and I have lost a total of 29 since I started 6 weeks ago. Good luck! You will do great!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
