Losing before surgery???

Recommended Posts

Hypothetically...If I have a BMI of 40 at my consultation, and get my insurance approval, what happens if I lose weight during the pre-op diet and my BMI drops to 36 or 37? Is there a final insurace review before surgery, or could they not pay the bill later because my bmi dropped??

I hope someone can answer. I love this board because I can ask all these stupid questions and someone always seems to know.

Thanks again!

I cant answer this specifically because I live in Australia, but I was worried about this as I had a BMI of 36. I asked my surgeon that and he just laughed, said dont be silly.

I had lost a bit before surgery like 50lbs which put me a little under i beleive 37. My docotor just asked me if I was sure I wanted this and I said yes for future weight gain. Im in NV so I think your safe as they say loose 10% before surgery!! Kepp up the good work !

I guess it would depend on the program and your insurance. I have blue cross and they only look at the facts as they were at the time when I applied for approval. From what I understand many programs do ask people to lose some weight before the surgery. Mine didn't, but they did tell me that once a person is approved, they don't kick them out for managing to lose a few pounds before surgery.

Yeah I don't think your doctor will care if it drops below 40. He will more than likely be very proud of you.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
