Wondering if something is "wrong"

Recommended Posts

I read so many posts about how people are never hungry after surgery and actually have to remind themselves to eat. I'm really getting confused.

I am only five days post op and my stomach is growling. My husband tried to tell me it's all in my head, but my stomach is audibly growling constantly.

I am still on the 2 week post op diet with only liquids and one Protein Shake per day.

I am dying to try a spoonful of yogurt or something just to get my stomach to shut the heck up! It's super annoying.

How can my tummy be so hungry so early on?

Should I call my doctor? So confused.

Are you taking an acid reducer? Some people have mentioned feeling hunger when they are in need of an acid reducer. My doctor has me on prilosec but I can take prevacid as an alternative option. both are available over the counter. Might want to ask your doctor if you aren't on one if that might be the cause.

I had a lot of hunger in the beginning before I was on solid foods. I got so tired of people telling me it was head hunger when I knew good and well it wasn't!! Once I got on soft foods (not just yogurt, etc), it got a lot better. Hang in there! It will get better soon!!

Mine made amazing noises early on...like Water sucking down the drain of a sink! I think it might be just complaining to you "What the heck did you do to me!" or something like that. You might be hungry, after all you are eating less than a bird, and the hormones are still there for a while. It will get better. Relax, the first 4 weeks are a wild ride and it takes a while for your brain and your body to figure out what is going on. just follow the Docs orders. There is a good likelihood that you will stall the after the first few weeks as well... like I said, hang on! Its going to be a bumpy ride!

I haven't actually had the surgery yet, but I have been reading lots of posts. At one point someone else had a similar issue with feeling hungry and someone told them that they may feel that way for a while because it takes time for your body to adjust to having the smaller stomach.

The noises could be gas. I never think I have gas until I eat something and feel a burp from the displaced air. It's weird. I find that air in my tummy makes a LOT of noises! Good luck.

My hungry is pretty much gone, but I felt some hunger on the liquid diets. Not like pre-op ravenous hunger, but I still felt hunger even if I drank some Protein Shakes. It will get better as the swelling goes down some and you get to transition to the mushy then solid food stages I think.

My hunger went on for a couple weeks. I was so desperate at times I CRIED. I am now almost four weeks out, and 99.9% of the time I have to remind myself to have something to eat. I think it finally stopped either LATE in week 2 or early week 3.

And for anyone else reading this who may be wondering:

Stomach acid does NOT produce hunger. It just digestive juices and helps produce some gurgling noises. :D

Many feel that stomach acid mimics hunger, and when they take care of the acid, the feeling of hunger goes away.

im 3 days post op and while i dont have any real hunger, i do have some serious sounds coming out of me, one just happened and it sounded like a toilet gurgling lol. the pain is much more bearable today and i havent had any pain meds yet. i take previcid otc and works well to control any acid, but i havent had any reflux since the operation, but im not willing to risk the healing process to stop taking my proton pump inhibitor.

it really is a wild ride :D i just wish i could sleep on something other then my back.

I was often hungry on the 2 week liquid phase too. Now I almost never get hungry and when I do a few spoons of mushies fills me right up. I love my sleeve! :)

I do get hungry, but the big difference is when you start eating mushies and solids you get full and satified on so little its laughable.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
