Taking Medicine with Food

Recommended Posts

So I've been really sick with a kidney infection that came with a 104 fever. The doctor gave me Augmentin (ENORMOUS horse pills) to clear up the infection, however, I have to take it with food and Water. I have been religious about not eating and drinking at the same time for one because my surgeon told me not to and for two because it makes me feel very ill when I have tried it. Yesterday I took the medicine with yogurt and water and it ended up making me throw up both times I took it. Has anyone experienced taking medicine with food, any suggestions would be appreciated.

How have things gone today? I'm just wondering if you should try something like saltines. I did a quick search and it actually says the reason you are to take it with food is to avoid it causing stomach upset. So if it made you sick with yogart, maybe you should try a different texture of food. Saltines are gentle on the stomach and help to absorb acid.

I'd also suggest sandwiching the pill between very small amounts of food with breaks of about 15 minutes before you take the next step. This is an exception to the rule for eating. Just something needed at times.

I hope you are keeping the pills down and feeling better.

I spoke to a pharmacist and we determined that I can take the pill with Water and then eat afterwards. I don't think it was the yogurt that made me ill, I think it was drinking after I had a bunch of food in my tummy. Switching it around the other way totally solved the problem. My fever is down to 99.9 and I'm feeling like I'm on the mend.

Thanks for your suggestions though biggrin.gif

YAY YAY glad to hear that helped. I did the same thing early when eating and even sipping early out was impossible. I was on heavy duty (3 different types of antibiotics) around 7 weeks post-op, and I had to take them 2-3 times a day. I did the same thing of pop the pill, swallowing just enough Water to get the pill down then eating.

Glad you are feeling better ! ! !

The saltines are often suggested as helping with stomach upset. As with your pharmachist's thoughts, I take meds that need to be with food just before the meal with Water. I routinely take an Omega horse capsule which really needs to be taken with food to avoid thier fishy recoil, and that works well for me.

Duh. I feel dumb. That's the way I take all of my meds.. I read your original post wrong and assumed that was how you'd taken it the first time, then added the yogart because you were supposed to have it with food. That's what happens with assumptions. Sorry.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
