Which protein drink is best for us to use?

Recommended Posts

I am so confused by all the different Protein Drinks out there? I think I have narrowed it down to a choice of 3. Muslce Milk, Muscle Milk Light or GNC Pro Performance AMP Amplified Wheybolic Extreme 60. I have tried them all in the flavor of chocolate and to me they all taste good. I will be starting my pre-op diet in October, my surgery date is Nov 15 and I want to get the most/best results I can from the pre-op diet and also from the honeymoon stage/losing stage right after surgery. Do I pay more attention to the Protein or the carbs or the calories? I talked to a sales rep at GNC and we figured out/decided that the GNC one requires 3 scoops to get their hign protein numbers, but if I actually use 1 scoop, which is the same amount for Muscle Milk then all the numbers for these 3 items are closer in range to each other.

Experienced sleevers please help clear up some of this confusion for me on which one will be better for me to drink. THANKS!!!

It all depends on several things: what your Protein requirements are from your surgeon, how many carbs you can have, how well you tolerate the Protein powders, what you're mixing them with, etc.

For me, I have a picky tongue. I can't do a lot of protein powders or drinks because they taste too sweet or too weird. Isopure is disgusting to me, but some people really like it.

Generally speaking, you want higher protein and lower carb.

I use unjury chocolate Splendor, which is 20 grams of protein to each powder scoop, and 4 or 5 grams of carbs (can't remember which.) I mix it with 16oz of skim milk for a total of 36 grams protein. Then again, I am not counting carbs very harshly right now and allow myself between 30 and 70 per day. If your carb restriction is lower, you may need something that mixes with Water instead of milk, or to use almond or soy milk instead.

There are a LOT of choices out there. You can get lots of samples through www.vitalady.com to try and see what you like and what you don't.

Good luck!

I Love EAS AdvantEDGE Carb Control... you can get it at any Wal-Mart..& Sams Club comes in a premix or powder.< /p>

I prefer the premix and although I am not a dark chocolate fan,, the dark chocolate is much better than the milk chocolage. You must drink it cold,,, I pour it over lots of ice... Premix 11 oz is 110 calories, 17 grms protien and 6 carb

I'd say whatever you can stomach, yes they are all over the place as far as nutritional value and calories / carbs but if you can't stand to choke them down they don't do you a lick of good.

Try several AFTER the surgery, I say after use what tastes good BEFORE my taste hideous afterward - your tastes changes pretty drastically.

I drink Boost! because they are smaller in size, have less sugar and I can stand the taste.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
