KellyL 173 Posted September 15, 2011 :welcome: Hi and glad you decided to post to the forum. I don't know about the school thing, except it's possible you could stay in school and just take all your lunches/snacks maybe? I know a lot of people have the surgery and have to go to work with it and all. In the beginning I know I had to eat every couple of hrs so you would maybe have to get your Dr to send something to your school saying you have to be on a medical diet with a certain schedule? I wish you a lot of luck with your surgery and look forward to more updates and posts from you.
Lissa 2,631 Posted September 15, 2011 Good luck to you! My Sister in Law had a Roux n Y at 17 years old and she's 30+ now. Her experience was very good and she managed fine through 2 pregnancies. Right now she has a little extra weight, but nothing like how morbidly obese she was when she had the surgery. I don't know if I'd pull out of school unless you are one of the few people who have major pain afterwards. Your school should be able to accomodate you in a similar fashion to how they deal with students with diabetes. You'll need permission to carry a Water bottle even during class and to possibly have an extra few minutes between classes so that you can eat. You're probably gonna have to carry a lunch box, but I'm carrying one to work each day without a problem. So my suggestion is to wait until after the surgery to decide whether to pull out of school or not. I applaud you for doing something about your weight now, rather than waiting until you are an adult and have major problems then. Again, good luck!!
bikerchick519 202 Posted September 15, 2011 I'm having my surgery in November so I can't say from experience yet but I worry about going back to work after just 1 week because a lot of people talk about being so tired. I would hate to see you leave school so maybe they can work out the eating schedule for you and hopefully you wont be too tired to stay awake in class. Good luck to you and just be very careful after surgery about eating and drinking the way your doctor tells you to. I wish you the best.
favoredone 590 Posted September 15, 2011 WOW!! Congrats to you and your grandma for deciding to change your life at an early age... I think the online school idea is great, as long as it doesn't put you behind. And when you return to school, tell your grandma to ask your doctor to send a formal letter to the school detailing all of the accommodations you will need (Water, Snacks, bathroom privileges, etc.). Your school should then provide you with a 504 plan (for special accommodations per medical condition).. This would help with making sure you are able to eat and stay hydrated while you're at school. Blessings and peace to you!!!
