Pre-op diet...just wanna make sure im doing this right!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I started my 2 week pre-op diet on yesterday, 9/12. My surgery is scheduled for the 26th, woo hoo!! The thing is, I'm not having any problem with this diet, I haven't been starving, I was even full after lunch yesterday and dinner last night. Wanted to check with those of you that have already been through this to make sure I am doing this right. The calorie goal is 1300/day, with 100grams or less of carbs and 90 to 120 grams of Protein, no sugars. This is what I had yesterday:

Breakfast: Protein shake (powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chocolate splendor, with Silk light chocolate) and a sugar free vanilla pudding cup.

Lunch: Protein Shake (Unjury strawberry sorbet with water), whole cucumber, 4 baby carrots, 1sugar free chocolate pudding

Dinner: Protein shake (Unjury vanilla with silk light chocolate milk) 3oz of grilled tilapia and 1 cup of edamame.

Snack: Protein shake (body fortress Cookies and cream with lactaid milk) and 1 Sugar Free Chocolate pudding cup

Drinking about four or more 16.9 bottles of Water per day, mostly mixed with propel zero.

As you can see, I love my pudding cups : )...Does this sound like too much? I thought i would be starving but I'm not so wanted to see what you all thought.

Thanks for any input...

My pre-op diet was low fat and high Protein, similar to you. I am using myfitnessdiary for keeping track and it was telling me I was not eating enough and outing my body in starvation mode, I was averaging 1100 calories a day give or take. I called the dr office and they told me I needed to get in 1800 to 2000 calories! There was no was I could easy more food, eating higher cal food just ads fast and carbs, so I have struggled but I have lost 8 pounds in a week on it so I must be doing something right.

Saw surgeon today and she said I was doing fine so I'm not stressing about it. Surgery in 6 days!

A sample menu for me:

B- Protein shake made w/ vanilla soy lite

S- lite string cheese and high Fiber crackers

L- cherry tomatoes, mini english cucumbers, ckn breast, pepitos, lite italian dressing

S- grapes and Fiber one yogurt

D- squash, zucchini, chicken breast, spray butter and teriyaki

S- Protein Shake w/lite vanilla soy milk

9 glasses of Water plus (i drink a lot)

I eat many times a day because I only eat small amts, I get full easy now before the surgery.

I would suggest doing the tiny bites and small sips practice, it is hard to adjust to!

Good luck!

Hi immeagain!! Thanks for responding! Your menu looks delicious...I see that you are including squash and zucchini, are those non-starchy vegetables, I wasn't sure? If they are non-starchy, I will definitely be hidding to the grocery store today! Good advice on practicing on my sips and taking tiny bites. Thats gonna be the hardest for me as I always, always gulp everything I drink. Good luck on your surgery, I know you will do great. Can't wait to hear how it goes!

I thought I was weird for not having any issues on the pre-op diet but I guess I am not alone. Difference with my pre-op diet and yours is mine is all liquid--bariatric liquid. So I get to have SF pudding and yogurt..stuff like that too just no solid chewable food. Now that the diet has started it is all downhill from here!

I have no idea if squash and zucchini are starchy or not... they are veggies so they work for me. I don't do peppers, onions, mushrooms, cooked spinach, so I am limited on veggies. I know that corn and peas are starchy but that is it.

I am excited, down to 5 days til surgery. It is very hard to do the sips and tiny bites (or massive chewing) but I think I will be glad for the practice.

I have decided as I hit the 9 1/2 lbs lost stage that the reason for this diet is for more than the reducing the liver size (yes that is important) but I think it helps morale, I know I have struggled with whether or not I am making the right decision but with the weight loss, it makes more positive for this. I think it also gets you used to eating better and less before the critical have to point, maybe making it less likely to make a mistake. Honestly my doctor did not push a pre-op diet, just a 24 hour liquid diet. I chose to do this because of this forum.

I think a little bit of success

a little change in habits

a little change in lifestyle

all helps to make this more successful.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
